Two Arts and Social Sciences researchers awarded Canada Foundation for Innovation Funding

Congratulations to Ellen Waterman (School for Studies in Art and Culture) and Maria Rogers (Department of Psychology) on receiving .Ěý

Dr. Waterman’s project, the Sonic Arts Participation Lab, will facilitate community-engaged research-creation projects in music, sound, and audiovisual art to address the complexities of ideological, technological, and environmental social change in Canada. The Lab will comprise audio and video equipment for co-creation, presentation, recording, post-production, and analysis of these collaborations. Adaptive equipment will facilitate equitable participation for d/Deaf and disability-led projects.

Dr. Rogers’ project, Student absenteeism and child mental health in the post-pandemic era, addresses the dramatic increases in school absenteeism among the world’s children and youth. Emerging research suggests that student absences have doubled and even tripled in some regions, and rates of mental health problems in children are at an all-time high. Given the well-established links between school attendance and long-term child well-being and health, there is an urgent need to address the problem of student absenteeism. Dr. Rogers’ timely research will advance our understanding of this complex problem.

The is a critical strategic investment tool designed to help institutions attract and retain the very best of current and future researchers.

Five FASS researchers awarded SSHRC Connection Grants

March 30, 2026

Congratulations to the following FASS researchers, who were awarded Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Connection Grants in the February 2024 competition!

Anna Hoefnagels (School for Studies in Art and Culture), along with ĐÓ°ÉÔ´´ Co-Applicant Kahente Horn-Miller and two Co-Applicants from the Native North American Travelling College, were awarded funding for the project “Indigenous Resurgence, Education and Community-Based Continuity: Onake and The Native North American Travelling College.” This event will consist of a three-day symposium and arts festival that brings together researchers, musicians, artists and curators to critically explore the role of the arts in sustaining and celebrating Kanien’kehĂĄ:ka (Mohawk) identity and traditions.

Justin Paulson (Sociology and Anthropology) and ĐÓ°ÉÔ´´ Co-Applicant Philip Henderson (Institute of Political Economy), as well as team members from McMaster University and the University of Ottawa, received funding to host a two-day research colloquium. “The Work of (Anti)Colonialism: Organized Labour and Indigenous Struggles in Canada” aims to support a novel and timely scholarly dialogue on the relationships between Indigenous and labour movements in Canada.

The “ĐÓ°ÉÔ´´ University Indigenous Media-making Summer Institute” is led by Kester Dyer (School for Studies in Art and Culture) in collaboration with colleagues at both Wapikoni Mobile and ĐÓ°ÉÔ´´ University (Greg Allison, Teaching and Learning Services; Hasi Eldib, Educational Development Centre; Duncan McCue, School of Journalism and Communication; Ellen Waterman, School for Studies in Art and Culture). The project is a research-creation activity that fosters safe university and community spaces for emerging Indigenous artists where they can acquire new skills in media-making, generate original artworks, experience a range of culturally relevant activities, and make contacts in the academic and arts communities.

Laura Madokoro (History) received funding for “Memory, Politics, and Precedent: Canada and the Kosovar Refugee Diaspora 25 Years On.” The grant will fund a one-day symposium commemorating the 25th anniversary of the arrival of Kosovar Albanians to Canada and Canada’s military and diplomatic involvement in Kosovo, bringing together academics, immigration officials, policymakers, politicians, private citizens, representatives from aid organizations, as well as Kosovar Albanian refugees themselves. The project will also create a Kosovar Collection at ĐÓ°ÉÔ´´â€™s Archives and Special Connections. Other researchers involved include Norman Hillmer (ĐÓ°ÉÔ´´, History) as well as colleagues from the Canadian Immigration Historical Society, the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21, and the University of Trinity College.

Monica Patterson (Institute of Interdisciplinary Studies) was awarded funding for “Intersections in Critical Curating Workshop,” a four-day event building on the project “Thinking Through the Museum: A Partnership Approach to Creating Difficult Knowledge in Public” (2021-28). The event will be co-hosted by ĐÓ°ÉÔ´´ University, the Canadian Museum of History, and the Ottawa Art Gallery. With a focus on non-hierarchical and intra-network learning, event participants will both engage with and facilitate a range of roundtable discussions, exhibition/city walking tours, and workshops with additional time for networking and relationship-building.

The SSHRC is pleased to support events and outreach activities geared towards short-term, targeted knowledge mobilization initiatives.

Digital Music Literacy in Scholarship and Pedagogy

University music programs often foreground European-originated music notation and cultural traditions more than other global and contemporary practices, excluding those without previous specialized study of Western art music. This project explores the pedagogical state of digital music literacy by contributing to the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) in the field, and will create and curate inclusive, technology-focused curricula and instructional resources—including digital audio workstations, sound synthesis, and AI tools for music creation and analysis—using lenses of decolonization and EDI.

Julie Tomiak receives SSHRC Partnership Engage Grant

March 30, 2026

Congratulations to Julie Tomiak (Institute for Interdisciplinary Studies/Indigenous Studieson receiving a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Partnership Engage Grant in the December 2023 competition. The project, in partnership with the Algonquin Nation Secretariat, is titled “Anishinabe Algonquin land, dispossession, and restitution: Developing models and estimates of the value of timber extracted in the lower Dumoine watershed, 1870-1890.” It includes a team of five co-applicants and collaborators, including ĐÓ°ÉÔ´´ researchers Justin Paulson (co-applicant, Sociology and Anthropology) and Vivian Hoffman (collaborator, Department of Economics and School of Public Policy and Administration). The project contributes to the challenge of addressing the dispossession of Anishinabe Algonquin land, and the associated disruption of Anishinabe Algonquin lives and livelihoods, by both the Crown and the Ottawa valley timer industry. It contributes by setting a floor on the value of timber and lumber extracted from the lower Dumoine watershed during the height of the valley’s lumber trade, and forms part of a larger, long-term research partnership.
