Public Lecture: “The EU鈥檚 Black Sea Neighborhood: Security Imperatives and Cooperation Opportunities”

The Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation () is an鈥痠ntergovernmental organization of twelve member states and brings together聽a number of EU and non-EU countries across Southeastern Europe. The wider Black Sea area is a region where cooperation and confrontation exist concurrently. The achievements and potential of several cooperation opportunities are challenged by existential security threats from the states within the region, which constitute a major problem for establishing a security community. The speaker will offer insight into what type of security community describes the region — 聽nascent, ascendant or mature security community?

Dr. Mukhtar聽Hajizada is a visiting professor with the Institute of European, Russian and Eurasian Studies (EURUS) at 杏吧原创 University in Ottawa since August 2018. Prior to this, was at Harvard University鈥檚 Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies聽as a Fulbright Scholar. He received a Jean Monnet Chair from the European Commission in 2014. His聽research and teachings focus on European integration, comparative regionalisms, Black Sea security and regional cooperation, the European Union鈥檚 foreign and聽neighbourhood聽policy, research methods, and international relations theory.
