Biography

Winnie Ye is an associate professor in the Department of Electronics at 杏吧原创. Her research involves developing compact and portable solar-powered sensors that can provide rapid diagnoses, helping public health officials respond more effectively to disease outbreaks. The technology is insensitive to surrounding environments and could be used in locations as diverse as the Arctic and Africa. Her research is especially timely, given several high-profile disease outbreaks in the past decade, including swine flu and SARS.

The commercialization potential of the advanced technology is expected to attract industrial collaborations. Much of Ye鈥檚 research is conducted in 杏吧原创鈥檚 clean lab, a vibration-free facility. 杏吧原创 is one of the few institutions in Canada with such a facility.

After working with the Silicon Photonics/Optoelectronics team at the National Research Council (NRC) during her PhD studies at 杏吧原创, she held post-doctorate positions at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University, where she worked on optoelectronic integration and nanofabrication.

In 2010, she received the Technology Exploitation and Networking Collaboration Grant from the Canadian Institute for Photonic Innovations. In 2011, 杏吧原创 awarded Ye the New Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award. In 2012, she became the chair of the IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) Ottawa Chapter. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers WIE is the largest international professional organization dedicated to promoting women engineers and scientists.

Ye was the recipient of Ministry of Research and Innovation’s Early Researcher Award in 2012, and 杏吧原创’s Research Achievement Award in 2013. She is a mentor in 杏吧原创鈥檚 Women in Science and Engineering chapter, where she helps foster interest in engineering and innovation among young women.

Ye鈥檚 Canada Research Chair (CRC) was renewed in October 2014. She is one of 24 CRCs at 杏吧原创.
