Launch of the Final Part of the CU75 Campaign and Contest

As we approach the end of �Ӱ�ԭ��’s 75th year, we’re rolling out the fourth and final edition of the CU75 campaign.

People featured in this fourth phase of the campaign include space engineer Andrew Rader, Sam Bat co-owner Arlene Anderson, bioscience innovator Gail Garland, PhD student Gregory Brown, philanthropist and artist Jane Martin, women’s rights activist Julie Delahanty, Indigenous educator Kahente Horn-Miller and national soccer player Natasha Smith. �Ӱ�ԭ�� Library Exhibits Showcase 75 Years of Growth

Two historical exhibits are on display in �Ӱ�ԭ��’s MacOdrum Library to celebrate the university’s 75th anniversary this year.

The exhibits are collections of archival photos and documents meticulously compiled to showcase �Ӱ�ԭ��’s history and growth from 1942 to 2017.

The first exhibit, �Ӱ�ԭ�� University: 75 Years of Impact, Imagination and Innovation, focuses on �Ӱ�ԭ��’s history as a whole, including photos of faculty members, students and campus landmarks dating back to the university’s founding. The second, The Way We Were: The �Ӱ�ԭ�� University Library, concentrates on MacOdrum Library’s history and evolution over seven and a half decades.

The two exhibits are the brainchild of Patti Harper, head of �Ӱ�ԭ��’s Archives and Research Collections, and Chris Trainor, the university’s corporate archivist. Harper’s goal was to showcase something tangible in the wake of �Ӱ�ԭ��’s 75th year of existence.

“We wanted to show textual material; whether it was a timetable that a student may have taken to class decades ago, whether it was a program for an event, or a poster, our goal was to showcase things that you wouldn’t see in a regular exhibit.”

Adds Trainor: “The two exhibits not only showcase �Ӱ�ԭ��’s 75th, but we were able to time it with Canada’s 150th . . . it’s something that we’ve been working on for months and we’re expecting hundreds of people to see it over the course of the summer.”

The actual assembly of artifacts was completed by Heather LeRoux, a research student in Archives and Research Collections.

“The hardest part was narrowing it down,’’ says LeRoux. “We have so much material and there are so many directions you could go. There were boxes and boxes of artifacts, and what you see in the display cases is just a fraction of what I originally pulled from storage.”

From last fall until March, LeRoux combed through the artifacts, trying to focus on what would be visually interesting and representative of �Ӱ�ԭ��’s different eras. “Some of our older newspapers, for example, are really neat. Founding minutes and correspondence from early administrations, archival photos. I wanted to show people what they wouldn’t normally get a chance to see.”

Above all, the exhibits aim to display the growth and imagination in 75 years of �Ӱ�ԭ�� history, and LeRoux believes they accomplish that.

“�Ӱ�ԭ�� started from a very small night school with a couple of degrees to the campus we have now…so it’s the progress that we ultimately wanted to display.”

Public History Kiosk Celebrating Canada’s 150th Unveiled by �Ӱ�ԭ��

On the eve of International Museum Day, the first of several public history kiosks developed by �Ӱ�ԭ�� University students was unveiled at Lansdowne Park on May 17.

A grey traffic control box at Bank Street and Exhibition Way became an exhibit of a post-game photo of lacrosse players and spectators from June 1891. With Ottawa’s football and hockey histories so intertwined at Lansdowne, MA student Lisa Bullock shed light on the Ottawa Capitals lacrosse team that used to draw crowds of 12,000 to the grounds.

“The kiosk itself is such a smaller area than a traditional museum exhibit,” said Bullock, “but we have the luxury of bringing information directly to the visitor. Here, the museum comes to them.”

The kiosk was unveiled by Mayor Jim Watson and Guy Laflamme, executive director of Ottawa 2017, in the presence of �Ӱ�ԭ�� History Prof. David Dean, the project lead, and several project partners.

Created by the Workers’ History Museum in partnership with the �Ӱ�ԭ�� Centre for Public History (where Dean is co-director), the design firm Chapter One Studio, artist Ross Rheaume, and Ottawa 2017, Capital History kiosk stories were funded by the Ottawa 2017’s Arts, Culture and Heritage Program (stewarded by AOE Arts Council, Ottawa Arts Council and Council of Heritage Organizations in Ottawa).

Each kiosk will examine a lesser-known aspect of the city once known as Bytown and feature a QR code linking to , where the stories are explored in greater detail.

The project is one way in which �Ӱ�ԭ�� is collaborating with the city for Canada’s 150 birthday celebrations as the university marks its own 75th anniversary.

Glebe Report Helps Celebrate �Ӱ�ԭ��’s 75th Year

�Ӱ�ԭ�� has reflected on its origins in the April 2017 edition of the .

“In 1946, a four-year-old college named after Sir Guy �Ӱ�ԭ�� moved into a five-storey, red brick building at 268 First Avenue,” writers author Joseph Mathieu. “The move was partly thanks to the efforts of Henry Marshall Tory, who in 1941 was enlisted by a committee of the Ottawa YMCA to found the college.”
