Does our research involve indigenous partners or participants?
Conducting research within Indigenous communities requires a research model and process that is community-directed, and respects and protects Indigenous culture and traditional knowledge.
Historically, research was conducted in Indigenous communities by external researchers who often did not understand the culture, knowledge or experience of Indigenous peoples. Therefore, when engaging in research with an Inuit, Métis or First Nations community, it is essential to work in collaboration with formal leaders, elders and other knowledge holders in the community.
Indigenous communities retain ownership over their knowledge and language, control over the research process, and access to the research data and findings. The research process with Indigenous communities may differ from the process outlined in this research guide.
