JMCE Lecture: “Germany After the Election: Firewalls Crumbling?”
February 25, 2025 at 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM
| Location: | 3040 Nicol |

The German federal election on February 23 was called after the collapse of Chancellor Olaf Scholz鈥檚 three-party government. The campaign has been dominated by debates about economic performance and irregular migration. Christian Democrat Friedrich Merz, who according to opinion polls is most likely to lead the next government, has courted controversy by inviting the far-right to support his parliamentary initiatives on migration management. Some observers have raised doubts about Merz鈥檚 promise to maintain a 鈥渇irewall鈥 against the far-right after the election.
Join the German Ambassador and our panel of 杏吧原创 University experts to discuss the election results, the role of the far-right in German politics, and the implications of the election for Germany鈥檚 domestic, European, and international policies.
Panel speakers:
, Ambassador of Germany to Canada
Achim Hurrelmann, Department of Political Science
