Meet our faculty, Professor Abid Hussain

Dr. Hussain’s research focuses on developing technologies for bioenergy and recovery of value-added products from diverse waste streams, including municipal solid waste (MSW), wastewater, and agri-waste. In this regard, he has centered his efforts on the following key themes: (1) Microbial electrochemical technologies (METs) for energy recovery, (2) Dry fermentation and integrated processes for biochemicals production, and (3) Bioconversion of waste gases to high-value chemicals. Furthermore, he has extensively studied the application of electromagnetic radiations to produce bioactive compounds from food processing waste. Some of his recent projects include:

METs for carbon dioxide conversion to bioenergy
Integrated Dry fermentation-MET process to produce transportation fuel from MSW
Bioelectrochemical enhanced AD for simultaneous carbon and nitrogen removal from wastewater
Synthesis gas (syngas) transformation to carboxylates
Application of microwaves and radiofrequency (RF) for treatment of poultry waste

Before joining �Ӱ�ԭ�� in 2020, Dr. Hussain was an Assistant Professor at the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (2018-2019). Dr. Hussain has over three years of industrial and project management experience. He spearheaded waste-to-energy and climate change adaptation projects at United Nations (UN), Asian Development Bank (ADB), and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI). At the National Research Council of Canada (NRC), he led governmental initiatives on decentralized solid waste management and wastewater treatment for remote communities.
