Philately in Troubled Times is a SSHRC-funded research project led by Prof. David Dean which explores how postage stamps have played, and continue to play, a vital role in shaping national identity through their commemoration of historical events. The objective is not only to generate new knowledge for the scholarly community but to bridge the gap between academic scholarship and the global community of philatelists and stamp collectors.

David is seeking six 3rd/4th year honours or graduate students to work on an exploratory phase of the project. This will be a fifteen-hour commitment for which you will be paid $30/hr.

The work involves:

  • attending a 1-hour Zoom meeting the week of April 14th introducing you to the project and setting out the research agenda (day/time to be arranged)
  • 10-hours of searching an online stamp catalogue for the first historical stamp issued by individual countries (the work to be completed by May 14th)
  • a 1-hour Zoom check-in meeting the first week of May (day/time to be arranged)
  • attending a 3-hour in person debrief on Saturday 17 May (time and location to be determined but either on campus or in central Ottawa).

Place-Based Research and Dissemination of the History of Japanese Canadian Residents of New Westminster

The (JCLS) is supporting the City of New Westminster (B.C.) for the project titled Place-Based Research and Dissemination of the History of Japanese Canadian Residents of New Westminster.

The project aims to support a greater understanding of the legacy of Japanese Canadians in New Westminster through the documentation and presentation of their stories.

As a funding recipient, the is looking to hire an experienced Researcher to source, collect, and analyze information about New Westminster’s historic Japanese Canadian community; with a particular emphasis on the development of this community prior to the Second World War.

Budget: The budget for this project is $75,000 with additional project funds for necessary research travel available to the Researcher (Consultant).

The Workers’ History Museum (WHM) is committed to preserving and sharing the history of working people and their communities, focusing on the history of labor, working-class struggles, and the ongoing fight for workers’ rights. Through exhibitions, educational programs, and digital initiatives, WHM works to make the history of working people accessible to all.

Position Overview:

The Workers’ History Museum (WHM) wishes to hire two Collections Assistants for the summer of 2025 to assist with collections-based digitization and data entry. These students will be vital to creating a digitally accessible collection.

The summer students will assist in digitizing and documenting over 1,400 museum objects, ensuring accurate records are created for each item. Tasks include photo editing, data entry, scanning text-based materials, and researching objects.

To better understand the collection, and why it is relevant to the WHM, students will be encouraged to write a short article on an object of personal interest found within the collection for publication on the WHM website.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Data entry and database management
  • Photo editing and digital imaging
  • Digitization of text-based materials
  • Self-directed research on museum objects
  • Database updates and data migration
  • Professional development opportunities within the GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums) sector
  • Production of a short biography for the WHM website and a reflective piece on their placement at the museum
  • Preparation and presentation of a final report for the board

Basic Requirements:

  • Background in public history, history, women’s studies, anthropology, archaeology, Canadian Studies, Indigenous Studies, Museum Studies, Art, Photography, or a related discipline
  • Strong computer skills
  • Good manual dexterity
  • Ability to work long hours in front of a screen
  • Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Strong English language skills (oral and written)

Assets (Bonus Skills, not required to apply):

  • French language skills
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle
  • Familiarity with labour and working-class history, including the impact of de-industrialization and the effects on workers and their families
  • Experience in heritage or GLAM institutions
  • Previous work with museum collections
  • Experience with data entry

The Visitor Engagement Officer (VEO) position plays an important part in creating a welcoming and memorable experience for our patrons. We are looking for proactive team players with an enthusiastic approach to visitor service and a passion for history to support our programming at Ottawa’s oldest community museum. 

The Bytown Museum is Ottawa’s community museum, exploring the stories and values of an evolving city and its residents, from its First Peoples through its early days as Bytown to present-day Ottawa. The museum is committed to engaging our visitors and community members in discovery and dialogue, as we aim to deepen the many connections within and between our diverse population. Its mandate is to collect, preserve, study, and make accessible, in the museum and online, the material and cultural heritage of the Ottawa region’s Indigenous, multicultural and diverse history. Visitor Engagements Officers are central to providing quality service and informative interpretation for visitors so that they may further their learning and develop pride and appreciation for the heritage of the region. 

General Duties: 

  • Provide helpful and knowledgeable visitor service both in person and over the phone, responding to a wide variety of visitor queries and requests. 
  • Interpret the history and themes of the Bytown Museum through informal discussions with visitors, school and group programs, and public guided tours. 
  • Perform daily operational duties at the Museum, including opening and closing, processing payments at the Boutique, Café, and Admissions desk, and other operational duties such as cleaning and light maintenance. 
  • Gather visitor data through the administration of visitor and teacher evaluation surveys. 
  • Support and animate special events at the Museum, including preparing spaces for events, animating event programming, and maintaining spaces between events. 
  • Work on a major project to aid the museum in furthering its mission and mandate.
  • Work on other visitor experience tasks as needed. 

ܾ𳾱Գٲ:

  • Minimum of one year completed post-secondary education in Museum Studies, History, Education, Marketing, Event Management, Theatre, or suitable equivalent. 
  • Experience working or volunteering with the public. 
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills. 
  • Command of both French and English is mandatory. 
  • Enthusiasm for engaging with visitors, presenting information to groups of various backgrounds and sizes. 
  • Able to work on a team, with strong interpersonal skills. 
  • Strong sense of initiative and ability to work independently. 
  • Flexible availability, including evenings and weekends. 
  • Able to lift and carry up to 40 lbs, climb stairs, stand for extended periods, and perform work duties in indoor and outdoor environments.

ٲ:

  • Knowledge of current museum practices as they relate to programming and interpretation.
  • Experience working in customer service, hospitality, or childcare.
  • Sales or other cash processing experience. 
  • A broad general knowledge of Ottawa and region, with an interest in local history.
  • Experience giving guided tours or educational programming. 
  • Knowledge of a language other than English and French. 

The Visitor Engagement Officer position is a full-time term position from April 28 to August 31, 2025. This position will be a maximum of 35 hours per week and will include weekend and evening shifts. Full-time extension throughout the summer and part-term extension into the autumn/winter season of 2025 may be possible. 

Interviews will be conducted in both official languages.

Candidates must meet Young Canada Works (CMA, HCNT, ImpactOn) eligibility requirements. Eligible if:

  • Eligible to work in Canada 
  • Between 16 and 30 years of age at start of employment 
  • Willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment 
  • Registered as a full-time student (as defined by your educational institution) with the intent to return to school in the fall.

The Project: The Kichi Sibi Historical Research Project (KSHRP), based at the University of Ottawa, is a collaboration between the Algonquin Nation Secretariat and the University of Ottawa (Institute of Indigenous Research and Studies and the Department of History). The KSHRP aims to foster good relations, strong communication, and ethical research that respects and prioritizes Algonquin communities, and facilitates rigorous, collaborative historical research that is appropriately accessible, critical, and balanced.

Position Description: We are looking for a research assistant to support the work of this project for 160 hours (compensation follows uOttawa guidelines and is dependent on background and experience), with the possibility of extension. Any of the following skills/background are considered assets but are not requirements: Indigenous studies, historical research and writing, GIS, databases, archives, digitization, event organizing, communications, web site development, social media. Work hours are flexible.

Potential tasks include:

  • Organizing and analyzing primary sources including historical documents and recordings
  • Working with ANS and University of Ottawa librarians to develop and manage a historical research database
  • Coordinating research team meetings and advisory council meetings, including setting dates and taking minutes
  • Transcribing and describing archival documents
  • Supporting the preparation of materials to share research findings with community and academic audiences, including participating in writing academic papers, presenting at academic conferences, and developing public outputs

We encourage Indigenous people and members of under-represented communities to apply. We will give preference to Algonquin candidates, and to university students, specifically those with connections to ANS Algonquin communities.

Job Title: Project Officer

Reports to: The museum’s President, Treasurer, and the Board of Directors

  • Compensation: $20 to $25/hr
  • Benefits will include 10 days of vacation and 5 days of sick leave annually.

Position Summary:

The Project Officer will work closely with the Museum’s Board of Directors, reporting on a weekly basis to the President and Treasurer. The Project Officer will play a key role in coordinating the museum’s projects and the work of its various committees. The position requires experience of project management, a high level of administrative responsibility, an ability to handle multiple tasks, and an ability to work independently and as part of a team. Full fluency in English is essential.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Review existing projects and make recommendations to the Board for further action needed to meet project goals.
  • Participate in the development of future projects, assisting with setting out project objectives, budgetary requirements, personnel, terms of reference, and grant applications.
  • Coordinate multiple projects approved by the Board so that project goals are achieved.
  • Assist the Museum’s Collections Curator with updating the museum’s collections database.

Contract Assistant Archivists Background: Heritage Professionals (HP) is a heritage consulting firm situated in Toronto. It was established in early 2012 and specializes in a variety of different heritage services in the areas of archives, information management and curatorial work. For more details, please consult the corporate website below. Description & Duties Heritage Professionals is seeking two individuals to take part in a project for our Ottawa-based client, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW).

This initiative represents phase II of a two-year project. The first phase involved archiving 90 linear metres of records housed in CUPW’s archival room in the headquarters building. The materials that were deemed archival were arranged, preserved, and described according to archival standards, captured within CUPW’s InMagic database, and moved to their new state of the art, purpose-built archival facility in Nepean. This initiative will involve assisting the archival team with research, the selection of records, physical processing, preservation, physical arrangement and the writing of RAD compliant descriptions at the item and file levels for approximately 120 linear metres of records. The materials are in a variety of media and formats housed in a climate controlled vault within the archives. The work will be carried out in a professional manner and in accordance with archival standards.

The archival assistants will report to the HP Principal, Ellen Scheinberg, who will be available to provide support, liaise with the other members of the team and the client, conduct quality control, and ensure that the project is progressing according to the timeline. A senior archivist will be on site to provide expertise and answer any archival questions that arise. Our special advisor, Iona McCraith, will be involved in providing her expertise when it comes to preservation and conservation issues. The project will take place in the client’s archival facility in Nepean and will likely be undertaken from late February to November 2023. The contract can either be full-time or part-time, depending on the needs of the successful candidates, and will run for approximately eight to nine months.

Qualifications: The preferred candidates will have a completed master’s degree in Archival Studies, Information Studies, Public History or the equivalent background and training. Previous practical work experience in an archive would be a an asset.

Some of the required qualifications, skills, and characteristics that the successful candidates must possess include:

  • Familiarity with multi-level archival arrangement and description according to RAD;
  • Proven research skills and experience;
  • Knowledge of archival processing procedures and preservation;
  • Experience working with both textual and graphic materials. Some experience with AV materials and artefacts would be an asset;
  • Proven expertise working with Microsoft Suite software;
  • Familiarity with scanners and digitization protocols is beneficial;
  • Experience with archival databases such as DB Textworks is an asset;
  • Strong communication (written and oral) and time management skills is essential;
  • Proven capacity to manage multiple tasks at once and meet strict deadlines;
  • Be detail oriented and have a high level of accuracy vis-à-vis work products;

The ideal candidate will demonstrate an engagement with Indigenous cultures, histories, or art-making practices, and how these have been represented or performed in institutional and/or non-institutional spaces and sites. Relevant areas of expertise include History, Art History, Anthropology, Indigenous Studies, Museum Studies, Heritage Studies, Cultural Studies, Digital Humanities, or a related discipline. The geographical focus of specialization is Turtle Island, the lands now called Canada, the United States, and Mexico. This is an Indigenous-specific position. This joint position will support ISCLAC’s Graduate Diploma in Curatorial Studies and the Department of History’s MA in Public History and its Public History concentrations at the B.A. and Ph.D. level. The position includes undergraduate and graduate teaching, graduate supervision, involvement in the running of graduate programs, and active participation in the collegial governance of their academic units, proportional to a 50/50 joint appointment.
