The Society for History in the Federal Government (SHFG) and Oral History in the Mid-Atlantic Region (OHMAR) have announced a joint conference to be held April 4-5, 2023 at the National Archives II in College Park, Maryland.
The program committee invites participants to broadly interpret the conference theme, 鈥淧ublic History in the Digital Age.鈥� Topics might include the historiography of oral history practice and theory; the impact of technology on the practice and sharing of public history; the challenges of managing and distributing data in the digital age; the evolving relationship between public history and the web; oral history programs in federal history offices; and research in the history of the federal government. This expansive conference theme is intended to encourage a lively conversation among oral historians, archivists, and public historians.
The program committee invites entire panels and roundtables, as well as individual papers. We encourage presentations that include audio/visual components. We welcome proposals from graduate students, federal historians, public historians, archivists, oral historians,聽information technology professionals, enterprise architects, and scholars from other disciplines.聽We聽encourage聽panels composed of practitioners with a variety of backgrounds and experiences in these topics.
Paper proposals should include a brief abstract of 250-500 words, a biographical paragraph about the author, and contact information. Panel proposals should include brief abstracts for each paper as well as biographical paragraphs and contact information for each presenter.

Join us (virtually) on聽March 17, 2023聽for the Underhill Graduate Student Colloquium, presented by 杏吧原创鈥檚 Department of History.聽 This year鈥檚 theme is聽History in Conversation: Collaboration and Interdisciplinarity.聽 Our objective is to promote emerging historical research by graduate students, whilst fostering collaboration and interdisciplinarity among our peers.
History is ever-evolving in scope and breadth. Its medium is no longer confined to written sources, but a collaboration of sources that range from oral histories to digital culture to material culture, and everything in between. History can, and indeed is, continuing to grow from beyond the confines of the academy. For example, the work of has mainstreamed such important, collaborative approaches, bringing history to the public and fostering broader engagement. As an emerging cohort of historians, we feel this is integral work.
With this focus on聽History in Conversation, we are looking for MA and PhD submissions from all disciplines that consider the following:
- Collaborative approaches聽(i.e., working with colleagues across disciplines, employing methodologies from other disciplines, bringing history to the public in new and innovative ways)
- 聽Impacts and implications聽(i.e., case studies, historiographical or methodological discussions)
- Graduate students outside of the history department whose research has a historical element聽(i.e., GIS mapping of historical data, digital humanities, music and theatre with historical influence, policy topics with historical analysis)
