Biology Department Mourns the Loss of Fareed Arasteh
The Department of Biology is mourning the tragic loss of two members of our community.
Fareed Arasteh, a PhD student in biology, and biology alumnus Mansour Pourjam, were aboard the Ukrainian airliner that crashed in Tehran killing all 176 passengers and crew, including 63 Canadians.

Fareed was on his way back to Canada to resume his PhD studies in Ashkan Golshani鈥檚 lab. Fareed joined us in 2019 as a PhD student. He will be remembered as a very hard working student/colleague who was striving to make an impact in his field. He will be greatly missed.
The Ottawa Citizen wrote about Fareed, after speaking with his PhD supervisor and a longtime friend. The article can be found .
Our thoughts are with Fareed鈥檚 and Mansour鈥檚 families, friends and colleagues at this difficult time.
