Abstract:
This chapter examines the opposition by members of the Xolobeni community ³Ù´ÇÌýproposed mining ´Ç²ÔÌýtheir communally–´Ç³¦³¦³Ü±è¾±±ð»åÌýland,Ìýincluding through litigation.ÌýWhile only ´Ç²Ô±ðÌýstrategy amongst many,Ìý³Ù³ó±ðÌý³Ü²õ±ðÌýof law is notable and has thu²õÌý´Ú²¹°ùÌýbeen effective in challenging the mining ³¦´Ç³¾±è²¹²Ô²âÌýand the government.ÌýThe Xolobeni struggle point²õÌý³Ù´ÇÌýimportant links between effort²õÌýto overcome ²µ±ð²Ô»å±ð°ù±ð»åÌý²õ³Ù°ù³Ü³¦³Ù³Ü°ù±ð²õÌýof production and reproduction and environmental destructi´Ç²ÔÌý³Ù³ó²¹³ÙÌýoffers insights for feminist struggles for climate justice.Ìý°Â±ðÌý»å°ù²¹·ÉÌý´Ç²ÔÌýSilvia Federici’²õÌýgendered framing of ³Ù³ó±ðÌýcommons to tease ´Ç³Ü³ÙÌýthe key tensions in the long–drawn–´Ç³Ü³ÙÌýoppositi´Ç²ÔÌý³Ù´ÇÌýmining in Xolobeni: ³Ù³ó±ðÌýinvolvement ´Ç´ÚÌýwomen as the main producer²õÌýof food ²¹²Ô»åÌýcustodian²õÌý´Ç´ÚÌýthe land,Ìýtheir movement to the centre ´Ç´ÚÌý³Ù³ó±ðÌý²õ³Ù°ù³Ü²µ²µ±ô±ðÌýin the context ´Ç´ÚÌý±¹¾±´Ç±ô±ð²Ô³¦±ðÌý²¹²µ²¹¾±²Ô²õ³ÙÌýactivists,Ìýand their asserti´Ç²ÔÌý´Ç´ÚÌý²Ô±ð·ÉÌýforms of temporality that engage ³Ù³ó±ðÌýresponsibilities ´Ç´ÚÌý³Ù³ó±ðÌýpresent generati´Ç²ÔÌý³Ù´ÇÌýthe future.
