Building on the success and mandate of the Institute鈥檚 research vision and sustained interest in graduate studies in the field of African Studies, we are excited to announce the commencement of the collaborative PhD with Specialization in African Studies.
This program is a first of its kind at a graduate level in Canada.
The inaugural cohort of the PhD program will be welcomed in the 2023/24 academic year across three collaborating units 鈥� Anthropology, Sociology & International Affairs.

The Collaborative PhD with a Specialization in African Studies is designed for graduates of Masters programs in the humanities and the social sciences who, through interdisciplinary research wish to enrich and deepen their training in a particular discipline or area of study by developing expertise in African Studies. The specialization will lead to degrees within the host department as follows:
Director of the Institute, Dr. Nduka Otiono notes that 鈥渕ore units will be added to the collaborative PhD in African Studies in the coming months. Amongst the units expected to join the Collaborative PhD in African Studies specialization are English Language and Literature, Architecture, Political Science, History, and The聽Institute for Comparative Studies in Literature, Art and Culture (ICSLAC).鈥�
Program Requirements
The Collaborative PhD will be available with the following requirements: Coursework,听Comprehensive or Field examinations, and thesis/dissertation will be on an African Studies topic and supervised by a faculty member with expertise in Africa and Africa related research in the primary unit. It may also be co-supervised by an IAS faculty member.
