The Underhill Colloquium Planning Committee is pleased to announce that Dr. Tim Cresswell<\/strong> is scheduled to deliver the keynote address at the 22nd Annual Underhill Graduate Student Colloquium.<\/p>\n

Tim Cresswell <\/strong>is a Professor of History and International Affairs at Northeastern University in Boston, where he also serves as Associate Director for Public Humanities, and as Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs. His research focuses on geographical ways of thinking in the constitution of social and cultural life, both historically and in the present. Central to this are notions of place, space, and mobility, particularly how these notions translate and are enacted or represented in practice.<\/p>\n

Cresswell has authored five books on the above themes, including On the Move: Mobility in the Modern Western World <\/em>(2006), and In Place\/Out of Place: Geography Ideology, and Transgression <\/em>(1996). Works such as Place: A Short Introduction <\/em>(2004; 2012) and Geographic Thought: A Critical Introduction <\/em>(2013) offer important theorizations and deeper ways of conceptualizing place and geography across disciplines. Recently, Cresswell has called upon his poetic prowess to further explore these themes, penning two poetry collections, Soil <\/em>(2013) and Fence <\/em>(2015).<\/p>\n

Currently, Dr. Cresswell is writing a monograph that takes the changing history of Chicago\u2019s Maxwell Street Market as a case study to advance a meso-theorization of place and how we narrate it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
