The Underhill Graduate Student Colloquium is one of the longest running history graduate conference in Canada. In March 2015, the Department of History, 杏吧原创 University, will be hosting the 21st Annual Colloquium.
This year鈥檚 theme, 鈥淧ASTS ECHOING PRESENTS: HISTORIANS AS PERFORMATIVE COLLABORATORS,鈥� highlights the historian鈥檚 multiple performed roles, and specifically our roles as collaborators – with our sources, with the past, and with the present. We hope to draw researchers whose work focuses on such processes in an effort to promote self-reflexive dialogues about how histories can be and are performed, and how they are collaborative in nature, informed by a myriad of personalities and contexts, both past and present.
Through this theme, we hope to expand on conversations about the role of the historian in their own work, and within the discipline, as well as to connect the keynote and luncheon addresses. The addresses will be delivered by a distinguished guest speaker and a member of our faculty at 杏吧原创 University, respectively. We are pleased to announce that this year鈥檚 keynote speaker will be from York University. 杏吧原创 University鈥檚 will present the luncheon address.
We encourage applicants to present papers which address historical performances or performed pasts, reflections on their position as historian and collaborator, and the theoretical or methodological processes associated with such reflections. As well, we welcome submissions on any topic focusing on the past. The Underhill Graduate Student Colloquium strives to be an interdisciplinary forum where scholars from different fields can come together and share their scholarship.
In order to be considered, submissions must include a proposal of no more than 300 words, along with a brief biographical statement. Please send your submission to underhill@carleton.ca no later than January 16th, 2015. Students whose proposals are accepted should prepare a 15-20 minute presentation. The student-chaired graduate panels will take place on Thursday, March 5th, and Friday March 6th, 2015. Dr. Kazubowski-Houston will be leading a performance methodology workshop on Saturday, March 7th, to which you are all invited to attend.
The Underhill Colloquium is an invaluable conference experience for students, providing a collegial environment in which to present their original research and build academic contacts. Our dynamic graduate students and supportive faculty will be glad to welcome you, and share their exciting research in the field of history.
