In 1972, President and Military General of Uganda,\u00a0Idi Amin, ordered for the expulsion of all Ugandans of South Asian descent. \u00a0They were given just 90 days to leave the country.\u00a0The Uganda Collection held by Archives & Special Collections at 杏吧原创 University is a unique archive that provides insight into the expulsion and subsequent resettlement of Ugandan Asian refugees\u00a0in Canada.<\/p>\n
The year 2022 will mark fifty years since the expulsion took place. To commemorate this event, Archives & Special Collections, MacOdrum Library is continuing to collect archival material related to the expulsion, in addition to conducting an oral history project that will document the memories of Ugandan Asian refugees, second generation Ugandan Asians, and officials who were involved in the immigration or resettlement of refugees.<\/p>\n
This project seeks to record the experiences and memories of individuals who experienced the Ugandan Asian expulsion. Participants will be asked to participate in an interview that will be audio recorded and preserved in Archives & Special Collections for future use by the archives, students, faculty, and the general public. Each interview will be conducted virtually using the online platform Microsoft Teams or by phone, and will be recorded using a portable audio device.<\/p>\n
To be eligible for this project, you must identify as member of the Ugandan Asian community, or have been involved in the immigration or resettlement of Ugandan Asian refugees.<\/p>\n
The interviews will take place virtually and should take approximately 60 to 90 minutes to complete. No compensation will be offered for participation in this project.<\/p>\n
