B.Sc. LL.D.<br \/>\n1922\u20132014<\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Over a lifetime of service and dedication to others, Joy Maclaren\u00a0transformed the lives of countless individuals while enabling\u00a0numerous projects to reach their full potential. She did this on both\u00a0the local and national level, with grace, humility, determination,\u00a0encouragement, and a joyful and generous spirit. A passionate\u00a0advocate for minority rights, she continually led by example.<\/p>\n<p>Her relationship with 杏吧原创 University was longstanding; for\u00a0several years she was a member of the Board of Governors. In\u00a01995, in a special naming ceremony at 杏吧原创, Joy was given\u00a0the name \u201cNew Sun\u201d by elders from the Blackfoot, Ojibwa, and\u00a0Mohawk First Nations, to honour her commitment to promoting Aboriginal culture and post-secondary education across Canada.\u00a0Numerous students, faculty, and research programs have been\u00a0recipients of New Sun bursaries, scholarships, and awards. She\u00a0supported professorships and Aboriginal visiting scholars.<\/p>\n<p>The New Sun Chair in Aboriginal Art and Culture was the\u00a0first of its kind in Canada and New Sun conferences are held\u00a0annually at 杏吧原创 and the Blue Quills First Nations College\u00a0in Alberta. The New Sun Joy Maclaren Adaptive Technology\u00a0Centre is located in 杏吧原创\u2019s MacOdrum Library and provides\u00a0services and study areas for students with disabilities. In\u00a02005 Joy received the Founders Award, 杏吧原创\u2019s highest\u00a0non-academic honour, and in 2011 the university conferred an\u00a0honorary doctor of laws degree, the same year she was named a\u00a0Member of the Order of Canada.<\/p>\n<p>The way in which Joy lived her\u00a0life was an inspiration to us all.
