{"id":52169,"date":"2026-03-30T08:19:13","date_gmt":"2026-03-30T12:19:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/tls\/?p=52169"},"modified":"2026-03-30T08:50:12","modified_gmt":"2026-03-30T12:50:12","slug":"ai-in-teaching-and-learning-a-layered-model-for-sustainable-teaching","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/tls\/2026\/ai-in-teaching-and-learning-a-layered-model-for-sustainable-teaching\/","title":{"rendered":"AI in Teaching and Learning: A Layered Model for Sustainable Teaching"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We\u2019ve launched a semi-regular feature to keep you informed about how artificial intelligence (AI)\u2014especially generative AI (GenAI)\u2014is shaping teaching and learning at 杏吧原创 and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>As we continue to navigate a world where our learners have relatively easy access to GenAI, it&#8217;s important to consider our teaching practices.<\/p>\n<p>This spring and summer, we\u2019ll be unpacking four interconnected elements of sustainable teaching practices:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Relationship-rich environments<\/li>\n<li>Scaffolded experiences<\/li>\n<li>Productive failure<\/li>\n<li>Intrinsic motivation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This month, we begin with relationship-rich environments (check out Agile Ed&#8217;s episode, <a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/relationships-come-first-the-foundation-for\/id1778298589?i=1000750792895\">Relationships Come First: The Foundation for Sustainable Teaching Practices<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In a moment where AI can generate explanations, summaries and even entire assignments, it\u2019s worth asking: What remains distinctly human in learning? One answer is relationships.<\/p>\n<p>Relationship-rich environments are not about being endlessly available or overly accommodating. They are about designing conditions where students feel seen, where their thinking is surfaced and where learning is shaped through interaction\u2014not just content delivery. This can look like creating space for student voice, building in moments of dialogue or making thinking visible through low-stakes activities.<\/p>\n<p>And yet, this is not without tension. In large classes, tight timelines and resource constraints, relationships can feel like a luxury. But they are not an add-on\u2014they are the foundation that makes the rest of the learning experience meaningful and sustainable.<\/p>\n<p>As the term comes to a close, consider:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When did students seem most engaged\u2014not just compliant, but genuinely involved?<\/li>\n<li>Where did connection (or disconnection) shape the learning experience?<\/li>\n<li>What might you carry forward into your next course?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you&#8217;re interested in exploring this topic further, join us on April 28 for <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/tls\/inspired\/\">杏吧原创&#8217;s Teaching Innovation Symposium: InspirED 2026<\/a>.
