For all interactions with students, plan ahead by asking yourself:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Who are the students?<\/li>\n<li>What do I want students to be able to do?<\/li>\n<li>How will I measure students\u2019 abilities?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>While our courses vary in size, level and modality, effective course design helps determine what skills, knowledge and attitudes successful students will have and how those outcomes will be evidenced.<\/p>\n<h2>The Course Design Process<\/h2>\n<p>The course design process should cycle between the following five steps:<\/p>\n<div class=\"slideme\"><dl class=\"slideme__list\"><dt class=\"slideme__term\"><a href=\"#slideme-1-analyze-situational-factors\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"slideme-1-analyze-situational-factors\" class=\"slideme__heading slideme__trigger\">1. Reflection &amp; Action Research<\/a><\/dt><dd class=\"slideme__description\" id=\"slideme-5-reflection-action-research\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><p><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Review if course artifacts and analytics<\/li>\n<li>Lessons learned<\/li>\n<li>Continuous improvement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p><\/dd><dl><\/div>\n<h2>Working with an Instructional Designer<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Working with an instructional designer (ID) could involve a single meeting to gain some fresh teaching ideas or teaming up for a full course design or re-design project. The ID will become familiar with your teaching philosophy, teaching goals and help you use sound pedagogy and integrated technology to meet these goals.<\/p>\n<p>An ID can also suggest services offered by other professionals and teams who can further assist you in their area of expertise, for example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/tls\/events-and-programs\/programs\/\">Educational development opportunities<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/tls\/educational-technology\/\">Educational technology services <\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/tls\/media-production\/\">Media production services<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/tls\/future-learning-lab\/sapp\/\">Students as Partners<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.library.carleton.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Library<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.carleton.ca\/pmc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Paul Menton Centre<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Assessing Our Work<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>TLS uses a <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/tls\/wp-content\/uploads\/CU-Indicators-of-Quality-Checklist.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">set of guidelines<\/a> when evaluating online courses developed in collaboration between instructors and our staff members.
