Are plagiarized student papers driving you to your wits’ end? Join the EDC on Nov. 3 for an interactive workshop that will explore how we can use course design to reduce opportunities for plagiarized writing assignments. As Hamlet (never) said, “The design’s the thing / From which student plagiarism oft does spring.â€

The session runs from 1-2:30 p.m. in room 422 Dunton Tower.

Don’t miss this great opportunity to discover how course design can be used to prevent plagiarism. .

The Art of Decluttering – Lesson Tool in cuLearn /tls/2015/the-art-of-decluttering-lesson-tool-in-culearn/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=the-art-of-decluttering-lesson-tool-in-culearn&utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=the-art-of-decluttering-lesson-tool-in-culearn Tue, 25 Aug 2015 20:10:32 +0000 http://carleton.ca/edc/?p=17417 When all your class activities are created separately in cuLearn, your course page can quickly become cluttered, which can make students feel uneasy, confused and even anxious. But thanks to the Lesson Tool in cuLearn, there is now an answer to this challenge.

The tool groups weekly course activities that incorporate readings, videos, links, practice questions, etc. in one place, helping your students (and you) easily navigate the online teaching and learning portion of your course. The tool has already been used in many undergrad and grad courses across campus – from Mathematics to Canadian Studies, and Engineering to Philanthropy.

Bring your lunch and join us at the Educational Development Centre on September 9 to discover how the Lesson Tool can be used to make the online portion of your course more organized, visually appealing and easier to navigate.

Teaching a first-year course? Don’t miss our summer institute /tls/2015/teaching-a-first-year-course-dont-miss-our-summer-institute/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=teaching-a-first-year-course-dont-miss-our-summer-institute&utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=teaching-a-first-year-course-dont-miss-our-summer-institute Thu, 04 Jun 2015 15:03:19 +0000 http://carleton.ca/edc/?p=17238 Our first-year students arrive on campus in September in various states of mind: excited, nervous, anxious, disoriented, ready or perhaps not so ready to work, exhilarated at or overcome by their first shot at more independence. If we want to maximize our students’ success experiences, we need to build learning communities that acknowledge the seismic shift that the transition to first-year university life represents.

This summer, the EDC wants to help faculty and contract instructors design first-year courses, assessments and learning environments that are informed by effective practices and infused with an awareness of the personal and educational challenges our first-year students face.

At our four-day summer institute from July 27-30, participants will take part in hands-on activities and receive feedback from facilitators and fellow participants as they hone their abilities to:

  • Elaborate on the impact of the first-year experience for teaching and learning
  • Create learning outcomes suitable to an introductory-level course, especially core skills-based outcomes
  • Build assessments that promote deeper learning, discourage plagiarism, and develop students’ awareness of the assessment genres characteristic of their discipline
  • Create teaching activities and assignments with a focus on formative feedback
  • Build learning communities, face-to-face and/or online, that foster student engagement and comfort

The sessions will run from 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. on July 27-29 and from 9:30 a.m. – noon on July 30. A light lunch will be provided on July 27 – 29.

We will also explore the role of feedback within the grading process and discuss methods for determining pass/fail or credit/no credit decisions.

A general outline for the session is as follows:

  • Identify and address key issues related to grading
  • Explore alternative models to current grading practices
  • Discuss how to communicate grading results clearly and accurately

The session runs from 12-1 p.m. in room 422 Dunton Tower. You can also take advantage of our optional workshop add-on from 1-2 p.m. where you can have your grading questions answered in a Q&A session.

Presented by the Educational Development Centre in partnership with the Paul Menton Centre, the workshop will help you gain the knowledge and skills to effectively support students with disabilities and other diverse learners in your courses. Your participation will allow ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ to meet its legal obligation for educator training under the AODA legislation.

The workshop features contributions from President Roseann O’Reilly Runte, faculty members, instructors, students and staff through a series of videos on barriers to learning, accessibility and accommodations. Some of the topics covered include:

  • Understanding various barriers to learning
  • Examining personal pedagogical conceptions
  • Incorporating instructional models to promote accessibility
  • Planning for accommodations
  • Hearing from students and faculty about their experiences

The workshop is facilitated by Boris Vukovic, disabilities coordinator at the PMC, a ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ graduate and a Ph.D. candidate in the Learning Sciences at McGill University. He has presented for a number of years on accessibility in learning environments and brings undergraduate and graduate teaching experience as well as an in-depth knowledge of relevant theory and research.

There are three workshop dates left for the fall semester:
