One vehicle that can help accomplish this is the undergraduate research experience (URE) course.

URE courses have proven to be very popular in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) disciplines. More recently, universities have begun experimenting with these courses in the humanities and social sciences, with FPA’s new IPAF 4900 – Research Experience course being a case in point.

On Sept. 23, Professor Simon Power will briefly review how the URE course fits into the overall undergraduate research framework and will then focus more specifically on how exactly such a course can engage undergraduate students both in research and more generally. The roundtable will include reflections from two students who have recently completed the pilot offering of IPAF 4900 in Winter 2016.

The session runs from 12-1 p.m. in room 422 Dunton Tower. Space is limited, so .

Join us on January 22 to learn how two ĐÓ°ÉÔ´´ faculty members have been able to bring their classrooms into the Ottawa community.

Jesse Stewart, from the Department of Music, will discuss several examples of community-engaged pedagogy drawn from his experiences teaching music at ĐÓ°ÉÔ´´ and in the wider community.Professor Stewart will be joined by Andrew Sproule, a candidate in the Music and Culture masters program.

Aaron Doyle, from the Department of Sociology, along with Sociology PhD students Deborah Conners and Laura McKendy, will discuss experiences teaching a course in Community Engaged Sociology, featuring students working in small teams with community organizations to research and advocate on social issues.

Through specific examples, the speakers will share what they found to be most rewarding and most difficult in teaching and learning through community engagement.

The session runs from 12-1 p.m. in room 422 Dunton Tower. Space is limited, so .

Undergraduate research at ĐÓ°ÉÔ´´ /tls/2015/undergraduate-research-at-carleton/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=undergraduate-research-at-carleton&utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=undergraduate-research-at-carleton Thu, 08 Oct 2015 18:21:00 +0000 http://carleton.ca/edc/?p=17531 Undergraduate research is an umbrella term for all kinds of learning done outside the classroom – experiential learning, immersive learning, community-based learning, internships and practicums, and even international exchanges and travel. Undergraduate research is happening all over campus and the Discovery Centre plays a central role in promoting and supporting these activities.

On Oct. 23 join us at the EDC for a teaching roundtable entitled Undergraduate Research at ĐÓ°ÉÔ´´ to learn about the events taking place at the Discovery Centre that facilitate undergraduate research and contribute your thoughts on how ĐÓ°ÉÔ´´ can move to incorporate undergraduate research in all programs across campus. This is a great opportunity to learn more about the Provost Scholar Award, the I-CUREUS Grant, the Bader International Travel Award, our library of materials from the Council of Undergraduate Research, and our upcoming Undergraduate Research Conference.

The session runs from 12-1 p.m. in room 422 Dunton Tower.

Teaching Roundtable: Tales from an Active Learning Classroom /tls/2015/teaching-roundtable-tales-from-an-active-learning-classroom/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=teaching-roundtable-tales-from-an-active-learning-classroom&utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=teaching-roundtable-tales-from-an-active-learning-classroom Mon, 16 Mar 2015 20:18:21 +0000 http://carleton.ca/edc/?p=16739 On Friday, March 27, join faculty from Wilfrid Laurier University for an in-depth discussion about their experiences using active learning classrooms.

Via teleconference, Mercedes Rowinsky (Languages & Literature), Gavin Brockett (History), Edmund Pries (Global Studies) and Ken Maly (Chemistry) will explore what worked for them, what didn’t work and their recommendations for similar rooms at ĐÓ°ÉÔ´´. The roundtable will wrap up with a question and answer period.

As ĐÓ°ÉÔ´´ prepares to introduce its own active learning classroom, this is the perfect opportunity to learn from other instructors’ experiences and form your own suggestions on what you would like to see deployed in the space.

The roundtable will run from 12-1 p.m. in room 617 Southam Hall. A light lunch will be served.

Discover how two ĐÓ°ÉÔ´´ courses are engaging the community at our upcoming roundtable /tls/2015/discover-two-carleton-courses-engaging-community-upcoming-roundtable/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=discover-two-carleton-courses-engaging-community-upcoming-roundtable&utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=discover-two-carleton-courses-engaging-community-upcoming-roundtable Wed, 25 Feb 2015 14:17:13 +0000 http://carleton.ca/edc/?p=16527 On Friday, March 6, join the EDC and professors Ben Gianni and Adje van de Sande for a teaching roundtable as they highlight how they have been integrating into their architecture and social work courses.

CEP aims to develop students’ skills through a combination of community work and classroom learning, creating linkages between academic study and the larger public life.

Professor Gianni will describe how the university can be used as a “safe” environment for parties who are potentially on opposite sides of issues, using three projects from his course as examples.

Professor van de Sande will focus on his course, Research and Evaluation in Social Work, which places a strong emphasis on a community-based participatory approach to research. Through this course, students have completed over 100 research projects for community organizations in the last nine years.

The roundtable will run from 12-1 p.m. in room 422 Dunton Tower. A pizza lunch will be served.

Teaching Roundtable: When PoodLL Meets Moodle /tls/2015/teaching-roundtable-poodll-meets-moodle/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=teaching-roundtable-poodll-meets-moodle&utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=teaching-roundtable-poodll-meets-moodle Mon, 05 Jan 2015 16:34:06 +0000 http://carleton.ca/edc/?p=16121 On Jan. 23, join the EDC and Mike Barker from the School of Linguistics & Language Studies for a pizza lunch and an in-depth discussion about the possibilities that exist when PoodLL meets Moodle.

PoodLL is a collection of plugins for Moodle that greatly enhances the system’s ability to seamlessly incorporate audio and video functionality for both students and instructors. This session will showcase a number of these tools including:

  • Audio/video recording assignments
  • Audio/video instructor feedback
  • Real-time virtual pair work (or small group work) options
  • Inline audio/video
  • Flashcards

PoodLL is not currently installed on cuLearn. The purpose of this session is to demonstrate the possibilities these plugins offer and to encourage support for their inclusion. It is intended for instructors who can see an application for this technology in their courses and for technology specialists who want to see the plugin in action.

The roundtable will run from 12-1 p.m. in room 422 Dunton Tower. Space is limited so .
