ITA Training Fall 2015

International teaching assistants (ITAs) face a number of cultural and communication challenges in addition to the traditional issues that face all teaching assistants. For this reason, �Ӱ�ԭ�� University offers international teaching assistants additional support measures.

This fall, ITAs can take advantage of training workshops as well as an International Graduate Student Learning Community.

Fall 2015 TA Training Day

The Fall 2015 TA Training Day will take place on Saturday, September 12 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. on the 2nd floor of the Tory Building. The full programme is available , and registration for all sessions via �Ӱ�ԭ�� Central is now open. The event will consist of two concurrent workshop sessions each featuring five unique workshops as well as two faculty teaching talks led by award-winning professors, Dr. Jim Davies (Institute of Cognitive Science) and Dr. Peter Thompson (School of Canadian Studies).

EDC wraps up successful TA Training Day

The EDC’s Winter 2015 TA Training Day event on Jan. 17 saw nearly 300 TAs brave the cold to take part in eight unique training sessions aimed at their personal and professional development.

We were especially privileged to hear keynote addresses from award-winning faculty members Dr. Aaron Doyle from the Department of Sociology and Anthropology and Dr. Adrian Chan from the Department of Systems and Computer Engineering. Check out a .

Registration is now open for the Winter 2015 TA Training Day taking place on Saturday, Jan. 17 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. on the third floor of the River Building.

Both new and continuing TAs don’t want to miss this daylong event filled with more than 10 workshops on a wide variety of topics as well as keynote addresses from award-winning faculty members Dr. Adrian Chan (Department of Systems and Computer Engineering) and Dr. Aaron Doyle (Department of Sociology and Anthropology), who are slated to provide engaging, motivating and practical talks about teaching.

��ǳٱ�:��Please be courteous and think of others whenever you register for a workshop. Double check your schedule to make sure you will be able to attend any session in which you enrol. Occupying a spot on the registration list for a session you don’t attend actively interferes with your fellow TAs’ professional development as well as their completion of their pedagogical training hours.

TAs and cuLearn Training

The EDC is proud to offer cuLearn training support for �Ӱ�ԭ��’s teaching assistants (TAs). For the purposes of paid pedagogical training hours, please note the following policies:

Group cuLearn training workshops: The EDC offers cuLearn training workshops for TAs. These count towards paid pedagogical training hours (no repeats), are advertised in our semester-by-semester , and are available for registration via. Note, however, that the regularly scheduled cuLearn training sessions are exclusively for �Ӱ�ԭ��’s faculty and instructors.

One-on-one cuLearn training: One-on-one training is eligible for pedagogical training hours only if the course instructor the TA works for confirms via email that s/he requires individualized cuLearn training. TAs should have confirmation in hand and ready to share with the EDC before scheduling a one-on-one session.

Only training sessions—and not troubleshooting inquiries—count towards hours for paid pedagogical training. We define “training” as a targeted overview of cuLearn with the goal of enhancing cuLearn literacy, whereas we define “troubleshooting” as solving smaller, specific cuLearn issues without an emphasis on skills and knowledge development. The EDC has sole discretion as to whether your interaction constitutes “training” or “troubleshooting.”
TAs can earn a maximum of 1.0 hour towards paid pedagogical training, per year, through one-on-one cuLearn training.
