The awards celebrate the support TAs give to the undergraduate programs in their disciplines, their roles in establishing a positive learning environment, and their work in implementing innovative teaching practices.

There were 170 TAs nominated, many with strong supporting evidence, which made for a very difficult selection process. The awards committee was impressed with the strength and versatility of the nominations, as well as ĐÓ°ÉÔ­´´ TAs’ dedication to enhancing student learning. After much deliberation, the following five TAs were selected as this year’s recipients of the award:

  • Parham Emami (FPA) – Political Science
  • Chloe Jones (FASS) – Psychology
  • Hooman Jazebizadeh (FED) – Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering
  • Kevin Hua (Science) – Computer Science
  • Mostafa Siddiqui (Science) – Chemistry

Because we received so many strong nominations, the committee also wanted to recognize and celebrate four additional TAs through honourable mentions. The following TAs were selected as honourable mentions for the award:

  • Elizabeth (Liz) Woodside (FPA) – Social Work
  • Francois-Xavier Chaplain Corriveau (Science) – Computer Science
  • Somerled Cameron (FASS) – Philosophy
  • Heather Douglas (FASS) – Cognitive Science

The awards committee was impressed with the strength and versatility of the nominations as well as ĐÓ°ÉÔ­´´ TAs’ dedication to enhancing student learning. After much deliberation, the following five TAs were selected as this year’s recipients of the award:

  • Justin Berquist (Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering)
  • Matthew Conte (Institute of Women’s and Gender Studies)
  • Melissa Conte (Department of Sociology and Anthropology)
  • Noah Schwartz (Department of Political Science / Global and International Studies)
  • Rui Zhao (Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering)

Each will be awarded a certificate at a private luncheon on April 19 as well as $250 for their commitment to improving student learning. Dr. Roseann Runte (President), Dr. Peter Ricketts (Provost and Vice-President [Academic]), and Dr. Joy Mighty (Associate Vice-President [Teaching and Learning]) will be among the guests present to celebrate the recipients’ accomplishments.

Because we received so many strong nominations, the committee also wanted to recognize and celebrate four additional TAs through honourable mentions. Each will receive an official letter from Dr. Mighty that recognizes their achievement. The following TAs were selected as honourable mentions for the award:

  • Shamarukh Chowdhury (Department of Psychology)
  • Jeremy Kielbiski (Institute of Cognitive Science / School of Computer Science)
  • Tiffany MacLellan (Department of Law and Legal Studies)
  • Nathan Woodruff (School of Social Work)

Around 100 students, staff, instructors and guests gathered to celebrate the achievements of ĐÓ°ÉÔ­´´â€™s diverse graduate and undergraduate teaching assistants.

The was presented to five individuals who excelled in their duties as TAs during the 2013-14 academic year: Laurie Brady (Canadian Studies), Brennan McConnell (History), Matthew Murdoch (Psychology), Erin Oldford (Business) and Sean Walkowiak (Biology). Each recipient was awarded a framed certificate and $250 for their commitment to improving student learning.

This year, there were also four honourable mentions for the award: Andrea Astle (Psychology), Cecilia Jorgenson and Chunyun Ma (Psychology), Nicole Marion (History) and Howard Needham (Computer Science).

Also receiving certificates were 27 participants of the , a flexible, self-directed professional development program. Recipients participated in 10 training sessions, wrote two reflective response papers about teaching and learning and one teaching tip article.

The 15 graduates of the certificate were also honoured at the ceremony. The program, offered twice a year, is designed for PhD candidates who plan to teach in a post-secondary setting. It gives participants hands-on experience with a range of teaching and assessment methods and an opportunity to prepare for the academic job market.

The critical role of in the development of their peers was also recognized during the ceremony. The mentors provide support to their departments and the university by guiding fellow teaching assistants as they identify and develop discipline-specific teaching skills.
