For each class you teach, you will want to come up with 3-4 learning outcomes that summarize the overarching expectations of that lesson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this way, learning outcomes are central components of your weekly planning and overall course design, which say to students, \u201cI designed the lessons and activities in this course to help you develop these skills or bodies of knowledge. If you do the work and take feedback into account, you will become more practiced at these things. in essence, learning outcomes are the blueprints of course design!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"how-to-write-a-learning-outcome\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to write a learning outcome<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Start with <em>stem<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose appropriate level and domain in Bloom\u2019s taxonomy (see below)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Add an <strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">ACTION WORD<\/strong> which corresponds with the chosen level and domain (see the table below)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Add specific content\/value\/attitude\/behaviour<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em class=\"myprefix-text-italic\">By the end of this class, students will be able to&#8230;<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em class=\"myprefix-text-italic\">By the end of this class, students should be able to&#8230;<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em class=\"myprefix-text-italic\">In order to pass this course, students must demonstrate the ability to&#8230;<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">DISTINGUISH<\/strong> between Bloom\u2019s domains of learning.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">APPLY<\/strong> Bloom\u2019s taxonomy to write a course-level learning outcome.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">ASSESS<\/strong> course learning outcomes against degree level expectations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">DESIGN<\/strong> learning activities appropriate for meeting learning outcomes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">DEVELOP<\/strong> methods to evaluate student achievement of learning outcomes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong class=\"myprefix-text-bold\">INTEGRATE<\/strong> learning outcomes into all courses taught.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"how-do-i-choose-specific-content-value-attitude-behaviour\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do I choose specific content\/value\/attitude\/behaviour<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Begin by asking yourself the following questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What is the purpose of my course in relation to students\u2019 program of study?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What is the relationship of this course to other courses (e.g. is it a prerequisite or an elective?)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At which level in each learning domain (see the hierarchy of learning below) can I expect students to perform?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How much and what can I expect students to learn in this course?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What are the most important things students must demonstrate to pass this course?\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your responses to this question help define your learning outcomes, so to help you refine your responses, consider the following probing questions:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Would I pass a student who cannot demonstrate this course-related attribute? If your response to this question is yes, revise the learning outcome.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can I expect this outcome of all registered students, regardless of background knowledge, cultural background, or other variable characteristics?
