Message from the President

Dear ÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´ community,

I am pleased to provide you with an update on Towards ÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´@100, our long-term strategic visioning process. The five working groups we announced in the spring have been hard at work on in-depth environmental scans to establish a clearer picture of where ÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´ stands today, including the realities we have to contend with, our strengths, areas where we can grow and opportunities that can advance our aspirations.

With this important work under our belt, we have entered a significant and consequential phase of the visioning process — seeking your input through broad-based community engagement. The consultations have already begun in a number of settings with various groups — including students, faculty, staff and governance bodies. Opportunities for many more members of our community to participate and to be heard will be announced in the coming weeks.

I strongly urge you to engage with the process because sharing your thoughts and aspirations is critical to shaping and enabling the ÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´ that we want. Every voice matters to ensure that we are drawing on a range of excellent ideas to inform, test and refine the strategic directions necessary for a strong and sustainable future for the institution we care about. The strength of this work lies in our ability to imagine what is possible together. By bringing diverse perspectives to the table and looking beyond today’s challenges, we can create new possibilities for our university and the many communities we serve.

Once the consultation phase is completed over the course of the fall, we will begin drafting the strategic vision and related plan in the new year, bringing together what we have learned, and setting the framework for achieving the aspirations shared through this process.

An ambitious vision of the kind we are pursuing to elevate ÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´ to global prominence as a leader in driving inclusive impact requires the perspectives and participation of our whole community. ÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´ University thanks everyone who submitted a nomination for the Towards ÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´@100 working group. The strong and positive response from across the community reflected a high level of interest in contributing to this important work. 

With more than 260 nominations, the Steering Committee had the opportunity to draw from a broad and diverse pool when forming the initial working groups. While the first phase represents one point of entry, many additional opportunities will be available in the months ahead to engage with the working groups and contribute valuable perspectives as the work moves forward.

Yesterday, over 300 ÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´ faculty, staff and students gathered for the Towards ÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´@100 strategic visioning launch event. Conversations centered on elevating ÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´ to global prominence by creating a distinctive and transformative learning and scholarship community that drives an inclusive, impactful and better tomorrow for all.

Share Your Thoughts on the Strategic Themes

The Steering Committee invited the ÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´ community to share their feedback on the five strategic themes until April 24, 2026. Each working group page included a short form with two questions. Your input will help the working groups shape strategic directions for implementation.

ÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´ University invites nominations for membership on the Towards ÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´@100 working groups.

These groups will play a central role in shaping the university’s strategic directions toward 2030 and 2042. Participation offers an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to ÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´â€™s long-term priorities and institutional trajectory as it approaches its second century.

There are five working groups:

• Teaching and Learning
• Student Experience
• Research and Scholarly Impact
• Community Engagement and Partnerships
• Institutional Health and Sustainability

Each working group will include students, faculty and staff representatives, with academic and administrative co-chairs appointed.

Role of the Working Groups

Each working group is responsible for examining a defined strategic domain and developing forward-looking recommendations to inform the university’s strategic plan.

Working groups will:

• Identify key opportunities, risks, constraints and emerging trends shaping ÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´â€™s future
• Develop five to seven Strategic Directions to guide institutional decision-making
• Consider long-term sustainability, institutional alignment and necessary trade-offs
• Contribute to a plan that strengthens ÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´â€™s impact, resilience and global standing
• The work is collaborative, future-focused and grounded in institutional evidence and experience

Commitment and Expectations

Serving on a working group requires consistent engagement over the course of the planning process. Members can expect:

• Approximately two meetings per month of 1.5-2 hours duration
• Advance preparation and review of materials
• Active participation in discussion and development of recommendations
• Engagement through to submission of the group’s recommendations
• Working groups will conclude their work once the strategic plan is approved by the Board of Governors.

Eligibility and Selection

Nominations are open to students, faculty and staff who demonstrate:

• Strategic and forward-looking thinking
• A commitment to institutional sustainability and excellence
• Willingness to engage constructively in collaborative dialogue
• Openness to diverse, inclusive, evidence-informed perspectives and experiences that contribute to robust discussion

Nominations must be submitted by Tuesday, March 31, 2026. Selection for the working groups will be made by the Steering Committee. For questions regarding the nomination process, please contact: strategicplan2026@carleton.ca

ÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´â€™s centennial is in 2042, and we are starting an exciting journey to get there: Towards ÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´@100, our strategic visioning process. Join the President for a special edition of the Town Hall to launch this important initiative and help shape an inclusive and impactful future for the university, together.
