I study and write about poverty and disability justice, and have practice experience in the disability services sector and in community organizing. I love jigsaw puzzles, poetry, and podcasts. I value and invite opportunities to build collaborative and kind relationships within my academic practice (especially with fellow graduate students) \u2013 feel free to email me to connect and chat!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>My Research: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My ongoing PhD research uses feminist disability studies and critical discourse analysis to examine income support policy in Canada. Broadly, my academic areas of interest include critical and radical approaches to social work practice and pedagogy, critical discourse studies, critical disability studies, and social policy. I am interested in transdisciplinarity and working beyond the boundaries of social work. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My academic work takes place across a variety of mediums. In 2023, I co-authored and co-designed an arts-based <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.basicincomeyouth.ca\/zine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">zine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> called to mobilize research findings from the Ontario Basic Income Pilot, in collaboration with Chloe Halpenny. I also co-authored \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gbireport.ca\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Proposal for a Guaranteed Basic Income Benefit in Prince Edward Island<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d, which was released in November 2023. In October 2023, I was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/appointedpod.simplecast.com\/episodes\/appointed-podcast-a-conversation-with-kendal-david-basic-income-canada-disability-benefit-youth-engagement\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interviewed by Senator Kim Pate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for her podcast <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Appointed <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">about&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">disability poverty, income security, and youth organizing for policy change. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/monitormag.ca\/articles\/allowances-trap-institutionalized-canadians-in-deep-poverty\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I co-authored with Megan Linton about institutional exclusions from social assistance programs was published in CCPA\u2019s Monitor Magazine. I have also contributed to policy briefs for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/invisibleinstitutions.com\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Invisible Institutions<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; among other topics, the briefs examine <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/invisibleinstitutions.com\/policy-briefs#brief3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">institutional exclusions from federal disability data<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/invisibleinstitutions.com\/policy-briefs#brief4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">institutional allowances via social assistance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In June 2023, a peer-reviewed article I wrote based on my MSW thesis data was published in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Critical Social Work<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and is available <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ojs.uwindsor.ca\/index.php\/csw\/article\/view\/8071\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.22215\/etd\/2021-14559\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My MSW thesis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> explored and challenged what it means to be a social worker in Alberta.
