Joy Karinge Receives Flight 302 Legacy Award

We are happy to share that Joy Karinge, PhD Anthropology student, has been selected as a recipient in the 2025–2026 cohort of the!

ĐÓ°ÉÔ­´´ the award:

On March 10, 2019, Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crashed near Addis Ababa in Ethiopia, claiming the lives of all 157 people aboard. Victims represented 35 nationalities, including 18 Canadian citizens, as well as permanent residents and others with ties to Canada. The flight was en route to Nairobi, where many of the passengers were scheduled to take part in the United Nations environmental conference. The Flight 302 Legacy Award contributes to supporting students whose areas of study help commemorate the victims of the Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 tragedy.

Dr. Cihan Erdal has been awarded a SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowship

Dr. Cihan Erdal has been awarded a SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowship for 2026–2028, and will be joining the Centre for Drama, Theatre & Performance Studies (CDTPS) at the University of Toronto as a Postdoctoral Fellow.

Dr. Erdal will undertake a new research project titled “Choreographing Radical Hope: The Arts as Political Response in Nihilistic Times” as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the CDTPS at the University of Toronto, working with Professor Kathleen Gallagher.

Through centering youth-led creative responses, Dr. Erdal’s upcoming multi-sited ethnographic research not only offers new empirical insights but also proposes a theoretical model for examining democratic resilience through artistic-political orientations as radical democratic engagement.

Postdoctoral Fellow and Adjunct Research Professor Cihan Erdal’s co-authored article, â€œBreaking the ‘Pact of Silence’: Armenian Youth Activism and Coalition-Building in Contemporary Turkey,” has been published in Displaced Families, Dispersed Memories (Helsinki University Press).

The chapter explores how Armenian youth activism challenges inherited silences and builds solidarities in contemporary Turkey, showing how memory work can become a future-oriented political practice. Closely examining the interplay between memory activism and family memory, this research article highlights the hybridization of Armenian and family identity and the growing influence of transnational family and activist networks.

Reyhab Mohmed Patel, PhD sociology student, is currently featured in the on Fifth Avenue in New York City. Reyhab’s project, Khawab x MIPSTERZ, Inc., is on display at the Arnold and Sheila Aronson Gallery at 66 Fifth Avenue.

The exhibit is described by the organizers as the following, “a democratized space for dialogue towards the generation of intellectual and creative ideas, with a particular emphasis placed on an investigation into what we mean by embodied faith and its relationship to clothing” ().

Reyhab will also be giving an artist talk on February 17.
