Dr. Carolyn Ramzy Publishes New Book “Taslim: We Are the Prophets”

We’re excited to share that Dr. Carolyn Ramzy, Associate Professor of Anthropology, has published a new book of poetry titled Taslim: We Are the Prophets with Mawenzi House.

The publisher describes Ramzy’s book as

“This volume of pithy, defiant poetry and prose explore the burden of ٲī—an oral transmission of heritage and ancestral knowledge—on Coptic Orthodox women. These poems highlight the ways in which Coptic women navigate the responsibilities of transmitting ancestral knowledge while reckoning with its costs: deferred joy and pleasure until the afterlife, an almost compulsory notion of motherhood, and a gendered comportment of sacrifice and submission, even in diaspora. ղī in the Christian minority of Egypt becomes an even more rigid bind in immigrant communities abroad. This book is ultimately a feminist manifesto for freedom, and the choice to live and desire out loud.”

Congratulations to Anthropology Professor Marie-Eve Carrier-Moisan who has been named the new Joint Chair in Women’s Studies at Ӱԭ University and the University of Ottawa

Marie-Eve Carrier-Moisan has been named the new Joint Chair in Women’s Studies at Ӱԭ University and the University of Ottawa. She started her 2-year mandate July 1st , 2023.

Working in both French and English, the incumbent of the Joint Chair in Feminist and Gender Studies at the University of Ottawa and Ӱԭ University, teaches, engages in research and participates in appropriate committees and events on both campuses. She acts as a resource person on women’s issues and feminist research at both universities. She also establishes and maintains contact with local, regional, national and international feminist educational and community-based organizations.

During her mandate as Joint Chair in Women’s Studies, Dr. Carrier-Moisan will propose various events on the theme of “Multimodal Scholarships and Feminist, Public Knowledges”. These events will be opportunities to learn and reflect together on creative and multimodal approaches to feminist research and ways of doing and telling research otherwise, drawing inspiration from emerging practices that tend to decenter dominant modes of scientific knowledges and to expand the possibilities of accessible, feminist, anti-racist, decolonial knowledges. She invites members of the student and faculty community, as well as feminist activists, artists, and scholars to join her in the various events and activities she will be organizing at the University of Ottawa and Ӱԭ University.

Dr. Carrier-Moisan will also be teaching undergraduate and graduate level courses, (including in English) at Ӱԭ University, “Storying otherwise: feminist scholarships through (ethno)graphic narratives” and in French, at the University of Ottawa, “Raconter la recherche autrement: approches créatives et multimodales des savoirs féministes”.

A reminder that there will be a breakfast reception to bid farewell to the esteemed outgoing Joint Chair in Women’s Studies, Nadia Abu-Zahra, and to extend a warm welcome to the incoming Chair, Marie-Eve Carrier-Moisan. This event will be an opportunity to celebrate their contributions and achievements in the field of Women’s Studies and to usher in a new chapter in our departments. The article, titled “Community Fashioning: Political ethics and Shi’i clerical training in Lebanon” is available to be read here.

Based on multiyear fieldwork research in South Beirut, the article looks at the training of young Muslim clerics and develops a framework for thinking about situations where ethics and politics become almost indistinguishable from one another. Professor Carolyn Ramzy has been featured in the American Religious Sounds Project Gallery, with her online exhibit entitled “Coptic Women Sing Too”. Please see part of the introduction below and the entire exhibit .

When you google Coptic music, there’s a good chance you will first run into the Wikipedia definition: “Coptic music is the music sung and played in the Coptic Orthodox Church (Church of Egypt).” For the more refined inquisitor, the search for Coptic liturgical hymns known as alḥān, many times by their specific titles or the names of favorite cantors, yields a plethora of rich, grassroots archives, carefully crafted by dedicated cantors in Egypt and around the world: alhan.org, tasbeha.org, Coptichymnsinenglish.com, and Copticheritage.org. These archives also don’t count the numerous YouTube channels, virtual lessons, Coptic shows on satellite streaming TV, as well as apps like Coptic Hymns, Coptic Reader, and iAlhan that cantors can now download directly to their devices. In the Covid-19 era, and well before then, many local churches also streamed their own services, archiving them on their own YouTube Channels. Alongside the voices and faces of everyday cantors, many of these hymn sites also revive the voices of some of the most venerated and beloved mu’allimīn, traditionally blind gatekeepers who have transmitted liturgical hymns through the generations in Egypt, and through these virtual spaces, abroad. Their voices, emerging from scratchy and digitized recordings, remind us that grassroots archiving of Coptic hymns have been with us far longer than the Internet.
