producer at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, only one story of hers did not make it to air out of the thousands she produced daily over her ten-year tenure.\u00a0 It was about Palestine, and it changed the trajectory of her journalism career.<\/p>\n<p>The so-called racial reckoning of 2020 forced the journalism industry to\u2013however briefly\u2013listen to its Black, Indigenous and racialized peers as they detailed their experiences with systemic racism in media institutions. Mattar wrote the National Magazine Award-winning article, \u201cObjectivity Is A Privilege Afforded To White Journalists,\u201d now a mainstay in syllabi at journalism schools across North America. But while the journalism industry has learned to name and begin to address anti-Black and anti-Indigenous and other forms of racism, it can barely even name anti-Palestinian racism. She spent ten years at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation producing for national TV and radio programmes. Her work focuses on race and racism, Middle East politics and more, and has appeared in publications including <i>The Walrus<\/i>, <i>Al Jazeera<\/i>, <i>Chatelaine<\/i>, <i>Toronto Life<\/i>, <i>Three Magazine<\/i> and <i>The New Quarterly<\/i>. In 2021, she received a National Magazine Award and Canadian Online Publishing Award for her feature essay \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/thewalrus.ca\/objectivity-is-a-privilege-afforded-to-white-journalists\/\">Objectivity Is a Privilege Afforded to White Journalists<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She was selected as a 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/nieman.harvard.edu\/news\/2021\/05\/nieman-foundation-announces-the-84th-class-of-fellows\/\">Fellow at the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University<\/a>. In 2023, she was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fims.uwo.ca\/research\/fellowships_chairs\/asper_fellowship\/pacinthe_mattar.html\">Asper Fellow in Media<\/a> at Western University. She is the host of the monthly Don Talks series at the Don Arts Academy in Toronto. She has taught journalism and writing at Western University, Boston University and Harvard University.
