In compliance with Ontario’s Essential Services Order, Senate met remotely on April 24, 2020.  Here are the highlights:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Academic Performance Evaluation and Student Awards – Winter 2020 Term<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

At the March 27, 2020 meeting, Senators approved the use of SAT\/UNS grading for the Winter 2020 Term.  In order to further support students through COVID-19, an amendment to the Academic Performance Evaluation rules for the 2019-2020 year was approved.  A motion to allow more flexibility in awarding Student Awards and scholarships was also passed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Preliminary Operating Budget 2020-21<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Provost and Vice-President Academic, Jerry Tomberlin, provided a presentation reviewing the preliminary operating budget for the upcoming year.  The three priorities of this budget were: student success and wellness, research productivity and external research funding, and investing in 杏吧原创\u2019s reputation.  In line with past practice, the 2020-21 operating budget is a balanced budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strategic Integrated Plan Second Draft<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Deputy Provost Lorraine Dyke outlined the second draft of 杏吧原创\u2019s Strategic Integrated Plan<\/a> (SIP). This version considered all recommendations submitted throughout the consultation phase, including those made by Senators at the February 28, 2020 meeting.  This item will be up for approval from both Senate and the Board of Governors, at their May and June meetings respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Graduate Diploma in Economic Policy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Senate approved a master\u2019s level graduate diploma in Economic Policy to commence with effect from Winter 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New Concentrations for Bachelor of Science Linguistics Program<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Senate approved the introduction of the Concentration in Linguistic Theory (Computer Science) and Psycholinguistics and Communication Disorders (Computer Science) to the Bachelor of Science Linguistics program, with effect from Fall 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cyclical Reviews<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Senate approved the Final Assessment Report and Executive Summary arising from the Cyclical Reviews of the graduate programs in Infrastructure Protection and International Security, and undergraduate programs in Nanoscience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chair\u2019s Remarks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

President Bacon opened the meeting with a moment of silence for the victims of COVID-19, nationally and internationally, and for the victims of the tragic Nova Scotia shooting. With the unprecedented winter semester coming to a close, President Bacon recognized those students writing their final exams, as well as the 5,000 Ravens who will be graduating in June. Moving to the Summer semester<\/a>, 10,000+ students have already enrolled in one or multiple courses, and with the new funding<\/a> directed to post-secondary students from the Federal Government, 杏吧原创 may see these numbers increase. 杏吧原创 is now planning for the Fall Semester<\/a>.  President Bacon has appointed Deputy Provost Lorraine Dyke and a small group of academic and operations experts to lead scenario planning and to consult with key stakeholder groups. President Bacon also mentioned the appointment of Dr. Brenda O\u2019Neill<\/a> as the new Dean of the Faculty of Public Affairs, starting October 1, 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
