Over eight weeks, participants worked with a modified credit card transaction dataset, applying machine learning techniques to uncover fraud and digit-pattern irregularities.

The competition launched on May 28 with a lecture by Dr. Aras Kayvan, Senior Data Scientist at MindBridge, who introduced students to outlier analysis鈥攁 key concept in identifying unusual patterns in large datasets. From there, students were tasked with designing code-based solutions that balanced technical rigor, creativity, and clarity of insight.

Congratulations to Amin Nabavi, a Ph.D. student in the DSAAI program, who finished first place, who earned a MacBook Pro and a guaranteed interview for a paid internship at MindBridge. Second place was awarded to Mohammad Reza Zarei, a Ph.D. student in the Computer Science program, and third to Ahmed Elnimah鈥攂oth of whom also received tech prizes and internship interviews.

Adnan Khan

Computer Science聽PhD student Adnan Khan is exploring a novel framework that harnesses AI to create tactile graphics from digital images.

鈥淯tilizing AI in tactile graphic creation opens up a world of possibilities鈥攆rom rapid, personalized conversion of visual data into touchable art to empowering individuals with vision impairment to independently access complex information,鈥 says Khan.

By integrating advanced machine learning techniques with computer vision, the system identifies critical visual information and transforms it into tactile representations suitable for embossing or 3D printing.

The approach automates the production process and offers adaptability, allowing the tactile graphic to be refined to meet individual sensory requirements.

鈥淭his research holds the promise of broadening individual鈥檚 educational, employment and everyday opportunities 鈥 ultimately enhancing inclusivity and quality of life.鈥

This 5.0 credit program requires students to complete the following:

Chart of non-thesis MCS pathway

*Important

  • Thesis students with funding who wish to switch to the Non-Thesis pathway may lose all or part of their funding.
  • Non-Thesis pathway students seeking to do the coursework and graduate project option, should not begin working on their graduate project until they have found a supervisor. Additionally, registration in COMP 5903 (Graduate Project) will not be permitted until the student can prove they have secured a supervisor. Continuous registration in COMP 5903 is required until the graduate project is completed. This includes registration in the summer term.
  • Non-Thesis, coursework-only pathway students do not require a supervisor.
  • This program pathway will be viewable in the 2025-26 Graduate Calendar, which will be released in early May 2025.
