2025 Herzberg Lecture: Exploring Hidden Structure in Chaos /scs/2025/herzberg-lecture-exploring-hidden-structure-in-chaos/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=herzberg-lecture-exploring-hidden-structure-in-chaos Thu, 06 Nov 2025 14:53:59 +0000 /scs/?p=22620 On Nov. 18, Join Dr. Prosenjit Bose from Ӱԭ’s School of Computer Science for the 2025 Herzberg Lecture, where he will explore the question:“Is There Structure Hidden in the Chaos of a Bunch of Dots?”

Imagine a map of scattered dots representing clinics, cell towers, or fire stations. How do we determine the optimal locations to serve communities or improve services? Dr. Bose will introduce two powerful geometric concepts, Voronoi diagrams and Delaunay triangulations, that help uncover hidden patterns in such data, with applications ranging from city planning to biology.

TheHerzberg Lectureis held annually in honour ofGerhard Herzberg, former Chancellor of Ӱԭ University and recipient of the1971 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. The series highlights the connection between science and society, exploring ideas that shape our understanding of the world.

Date: Tuesday, November 18, 2025
Location: HS 1301, Health Sciences Building, Ӱԭ University
Free Admission – Open to students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the public!

Ӱԭ Students Crack Real-World AI Challenge in MindBridge’s 2025 Data Science Competition /scs/2025/carleton-students-crack-real-world-ai-challenge-in-mindbridges-2025-data-science-competition/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=carleton-students-crack-real-world-ai-challenge-in-mindbridges-2025-data-science-competition Mon, 25 Aug 2025 19:38:41 +0000 /scs/?p=22126 The, held in partnership with the Ӱԭ University Institute for Data Science (CUIDS), invited students to build AI models capable of detecting anomalies in financial data. Over eight weeks, participants worked with a modified credit card transaction dataset, applying machine learning techniques to uncover fraud and digit-pattern irregularities.

The competition launched on May 28 with a lecture by Dr. Aras Kayvan, Senior Data Scientist at MindBridge, who introduced students to outlier analysis—a key concept in identifying unusual patterns in large datasets. From there, students were tasked with designing code-based solutions that balanced technical rigor, creativity, and clarity of insight.

Congratulations to Amin Nabavi, a Ph.D. student in the DSAAI program, who finished first place, who earned a MacBook Pro and a guaranteed interview for a paid internship at MindBridge. Second place was awarded to Mohammad Reza Zarei, a Ph.D. student in the Computer Science program, and third to Ahmed Elnimah—both of whom also received tech prizes and internship interviews.

Please visit the Ottawa Life website for more information on the MindBridge Data Science Challenge.
