Her work draws on decolonial theories and methodologies, with a social conceptualization of space and a feminist epistemological stance.

She is passionate about research that centers lived experience, traditional knowledge, and Indigenous futurities.

This role is part of a national project lead by Universit茅 Laval, 杏吧原创 University and Concordia University that seeks to co-develop multidisciplinary research programs with Indigenous communities and government agencies across Northern Canada to advance sustainable fisheries development and food security using advanced genomic technologies

Project Description

As a part of , a collaboration between Northern Indigenous organizations, universities, and government agencies, we are conducting surveys at fishing derbies throughout Eeyou Istchee.聽 The survey asks participants about their experiences with and views on fishing derbies. This research will inform local entities about attitudes towards fishing derbies and how derbies contribute to the local economy and food security. The survey was endorsed by the Eeyou Istchee Research Advisory Board with representation from the Cree Nation Government, the Cree Trappers鈥 Association, the Cree Nation of Mistissini, the Cree Nation of Waswanipi, the Eeyou Marine Region Wildlife Board, and the Cree Board of Health and Social Services of James Bay.

Eeyou Istchee Fishing Derby Survey

The 杏吧原创 University FISHES team (Stephan Schott, Johann Strube) together with Stephanie Varty (Eeyou Marine Region Wildlife Board), Emily Sinave (Cree Nation Government) and Kia Marin (Concordia University) are designing a survey of participants of fishing derbies in Eeyou Istchee. The survey, which has been discussed at the February 2022 Eeyou Istchee Research Advisory Board, will inquire about motivations to attend derbies, views on derbies, preferences for diverse types of derbies, and their contribution to food security and fishing activities for Cree communities in Eeyou Istchee. The research team also plans to interview the derby organizers about the history, target audience, and goals of their derbies. For inquires regarding

North American Indigenous Fishing Tourism Survey

Stephan Schott and Johann Strube of the 杏吧原创 University FISHES team are designing a North America wide survey with recreational anglers on their interest to visit Northern Indigenous communities for fishing tourism. This survey will gauge the economic potential for Northern Indigenous communities to participate in the fishing tourism industry. The research will also involve focus groups (group interviews) in Cree First Nations in Eeyou Istchee (and potentially other FISHES partner communities) about the risks and opportunities of fishing tourism as perceived by the communities.
