World Refugee Day /scholars-at-risk/2025/world-refugee-day/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=world-refugee-day Fri, 20 Jun 2025 20:51:13 +0000 /scholars-at-risk/?p=1287 Today, June 20, is World Refugee Day, an international day of recognition first organized by the UN in 2001 to mark the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees. While Canada is a signatory to that Convention and has generally had a laudatory record, from helping resettle refugees from Indochina in 1979 to Afghan and Syrian families more recently, political support for immigration has been weakening, even in cases of refugees. Today, there are roughly 123 million people forcibly displaced from their homes, an increase of 6 percent from the previous year, driven by new wars in Ukraine, Gaza, the DRC, Sudan, and other places. Political, economic, and ecological instability will only make it worse. While the vast majority of refugees today are internally displaced, nearly 43 million are cross-border exiles under UNHCR鈥檚 mandate鈥攁n increase of 28 million since 2011. As these numbers rise, the political climate in wealthier states has turned against the very Convention they once designed.

At 杏吧原创鈥檚 recent 鈥淪afe Havens and Knowledge Networks in Canada鈥 conference, organized in part by the Scholars at Risk Committee, the audience was reminded that one of the most famous refugees of the last century was Albert Einstein. 杏吧原创 Physics Professor Dr. Mustafa Bahran recounted his own escape from Yemen in 2015, and subsequent long journey via, Saudi Arabia, the United States and eventually to Canada, a journey made possible only through a global network of people working to provide support for refugees. 杏吧原创’s Scholars at Risk Committee remains deeply and unreservedly committed to providing safe shelter to academic refugees from around the world.

The application deadline is February 21, 2025.

Facilitated by the RSC College, ARDAA supports academics and artists from around the world who have been displaced through war, conflicts or threats of violence and who, prior to their displacement, were engaged in innovative and entrepreneurial research activity, demonstrating a commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration, leadership and responsibility to their communities, and who were making meaningful contributions to society.

The ARDAA program supports eligible candidates in three ways:

  1. By offering membership in the RSC College to up to two eligible applicants each year. Applications are invited from eligible candidates to be part of the 2025 cohort of the RSC College. More details about the application process and eligibility criteria are
  2. By offering mentorship from RSC Fellows and College Members. RSC Members interested in volunteering as mentors should contact ardaa@rsc-src.ca.
  3. By hosting workshops to assist eligible candidates in navigating academia in Canada. This year’s workshop will be held in April in Ottawa.

Get Involved

A key aspect of the program is mentorship from RSC Members. The ARDAA program is seeking volunteers from across Canada and across disciplines to serve as mentors. The aim of the program is to connect candidates with mentors from the same institution/region and/or from the same discipline, and mentors are currently needed in all areas. The role of an RSC Mentor will be to support the candidate in navigating academia in Canada. RSC Members interested in volunteering as mentors should contact ardaa@rsc-src.ca.

A Personal Reflection on Art, Human Rights, and Resilience /scholars-at-risk/2025/a-personal-reflection-on-art-human-rights-and-resilience/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=a-personal-reflection-on-art-human-rights-and-resilience Fri, 03 Jan 2025 11:52:00 +0000 /scholars-at-risk/?p=1219 December 2 was a remarkable day at 杏吧原创 University as we hosted “Mysteries Near the Waterfall”, an art exhibition by Ukrainian artist Nataliia Kononova鈥攁n event that deeply resonated with me, both as someone who loves art and as co-chair of Scholars at Risk 杏吧原创.

Reflecting on 2024, this event reminded me why the work we do matters so profoundly. Through the lens of art, we witnessed the resilience of individuals who continue to champion justice and academic freedom despite unimaginable challenges. It was a privilege to stand alongside such inspiring voices and to reaffirm our shared commitment to human rights and the transformative power of education.

We were honored to hear from 杏吧原创 University鈥檚 Provost L. Pauline Rankin and , Canada鈥檚 Permanent Representative to United Nations.听Their powerful words highlighted the global urgency of defending academic freedom and protecting those who face threats to their lives.

For me, this event also felt like a step forward in advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Quality Education (Goal 4), Reduced Inequalities (Goal 10), and Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions (Goal 16). Supporting scholars at risk is more than a responsibility鈥攊t鈥檚 a call to action to build a more just and equitable world.

Thank you to everyone who made this event possible, especially our incredible team and the 杏吧原创 University community, who show every day what it means to stand for human rights and academic freedom.

If you weren鈥檛 able to join us, I encourage you to learn more about our program – Scholars at Risk – 杏吧原创 University – and how you can support this critical work.

Special thanks to Linda Hartwell for capturing the essence of the event in her powerful article. Read more about the event here: 杏吧原创 Hosts Celebration of Art, Human Rights and Resilience – Office of the Provost and Vice-President (Academic)

Wishing you all a hopeful and inspiring 2025!
