These examinations are designed to evaluate the candidate&#8217;s comprehensive understanding of the discipline. The examination process consists of two written exams followed by an oral examination before a faculty committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"examination-structure\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Examination Structure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0<strong>Written Examinations<\/strong><ul><li><strong>Major Topic Exam<\/strong>: 3 hours in duration<\/li><li><strong>Minor Topic Exam<\/strong>: 2 hours in duration<\/li><\/ul>Candidates must choose a\u00a0<strong>major<\/strong>\u00a0and a\u00a0<strong>minor<\/strong>\u00a0exam from the list of available topics. These written exams assess the candidate\u2019s knowledge at the senior undergraduate or beginning master\u2019s level. This examination involves:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A review and discussion of the candidate\u2019s written exams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additional questioning to assess the candidate\u2019s breadth and depth of knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"scheduling-and-timelines\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Scheduling and Timelines<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"full-time-students\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Full-Time Students<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Fall Admits<\/strong>: Students admitted in the Fall term are required to write the comprehensive examinations in the following Spring term. For example, a student admitted in Fall 2024 must complete the exams in Spring 2025.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Winter Admits<\/strong>: Students admitted in the Winter term may choose to write the exams in the same Spring term or defer to the following Spring. For example, a student admitted in Winter 2024 may write in Spring 2024 or Spring 2025.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"part-time-students\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Part-Time Students<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Part-time students are granted an additional year to prepare. For example, a student admitted in Fall 2024 is required to write the exams in Spring 2026.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"postponement-policy\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Postponement Policy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Students may request to postpone their comprehensive examinations under exceptional circumstances. Requests must be supported by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A\u00a0<strong>valid reason<\/strong>\u00a0for the delay.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Written approval<\/strong>\u00a0from the student\u2019s academic supervisor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>All requests for postponement must be submitted in writing and approved in advance.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"thesis-defence\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Thesis Defence<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are finalizing your thesis and would like to defend this term, you must inform your thesis supervisor and the department promptly,&nbsp;at least 3 weeks before the defence for MASc and PhD proposals, and at least 5 weeks before the defence for PhD. The official deadline to submit your <strong>supervisor-approved thesis <\/strong>differs&nbsp;every term but can be found in the <u><a href=\"https:\/\/calendar.carleton.ca\/academicyear\/\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">Academic Calendar<\/a><\/u>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Defence committees are comprised of faculty members from ÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´ University, the University&nbsp;of Ottawa, and other universities for PhD defences (i.e.: the external examiner). Faculty members have limited availability at the end of the term; please consider that a suitable time slot for your defence must accommodate all committee members&#8217; schedules. The department can poll committee members for their availability, but this will inevitably add several days before the defence can be scheduled.
