New Study: Staying Alert in Autopilot: The Effects of Trust in Automation and Attentional Capacity on Situation Awareness in Senior Drivers

We are recruiting participants for research exploring how trust in automation and attentional capacity affect senior driver safety. If you are interested please see the contact information below.

Study Overview: The study is called: Staying Alert in Autopilot: The Effects of Trust in Automation and Attentional Capacity on Situation Awareness in Senior Drivers. In this study, participants will complete short driving scenarios (5-10 mins each) in a simulator while wearing an EEG headset.

We are looking for senior drivers to participate in two sessions of 2 hours each, for a total time commitment of 4 hours. Participants will receive a $20 GoGift gift card at the end of each session ($40 total) and will be provided with free parking.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Aged 55 or older
  • Normal or corrected-to-normal vision and hearing
  • Valid driver’s license

This research will help us understand how trust in automated driving systems and attentional capacity influence senior drivers’ ability to stay aware of their surroundings, which is crucial for safe driving. The findings will lay the foundation for the development of future automated driving systems, designed to improve senior driver safety.

If you or someone you know may be interested and eligible to participate, please feel free to contact the ACE Lab research Team at acelabresearch@gmail.com or book your time slot using the following online scheduler: .

Volunteers needed for SENSE-MD: Survey for Mature Driver

We are inviting Canadian residents aged 55 or older who currently hold or have held a valid driver’s license within the past year to participate in our study, “SENSE-MD: Survey for Mature Drivers.” The study involves a 20-30 minute anonymous online survey about your driving experiences and attitudes toward driving safety technology. You can complete it at your convenience before October 31, 2024.

Your participation will help us develop technology that provides older drivers with personalized risk information from car sensors, improving safety, adjusting driving habits, and supporting aging in place.

As a thank you, you will have the opportunity to enter a draw for one of ten $25 Amazon gift cards. Winners will be contacted by email after October 31, 2024.

If you have any questions about the research, please email Lindsay McCauley at lindsaymccauley@cunet.carleton.ca.

This project was reviewed and cleared by the ĐÓ°ÉÔ´´ University Research Ethics Board B. Clearance #121710. If you have any ethical concerns with the study, please contact the ĐÓ°ÉÔ´´ University Research Ethics Board, preferably by email at ethics@carleton.ca or you can leave a message by phone at 613-520-2600 ext. 2517.

To participate, please visit  to access the survey. The survey will close on October 31, 2024.
