Event Description:

Field education is an important part of undergraduate training in the geosciences.

Studies show that field education has many benefits to students academically, professionally and personally.��Many departments include completion of a field course as a requirement for degree completion, and field experience is often used as a selection criterion for geoscience graduate programs and jobs. However, accessible field programs are incredibly rare, which means the benefits of field experience are rarely available to students who struggle with the physical requirements, environment, format, or time commitments required in a traditional field course.

The GeoSPACE program (supported by NSF award #2023124 and donations) is a planetary geology field course and mentoring program takes an intersectional and disability-centered approach to break down barriers to participation in field courses for students from traditionally marginalized identities in geology. The unique accessible, hybrid format enables students to engage with field learning in a way that works for their needs. Field activities are planned with access and flexibility in mind. The virtual program enables students to engage in a synchronous field course through live streams, social platforms and remote sensing activities that compare field sites on Earth to locations on other planets. Together, in-field students (astronauts) and virtual students (Mission Control) combine their unique vantage points to tackle complex geology questions that neither group can answer alone.

Now in its third year, GeoSPACE provides opportunities for qualitative examinations of the use of communication technology in field education, the experiences of students with disabilities and other under-supported identities in the geosciences, the importance of community building, and the impact of the program on student retention, career progression and sense of belonging. This talk will focus on ways to make field learning (or any educational setting) more accessible, and the vital role experiential learning can play in creating more inclusive and equitable science disciplines.

Event Speaker: Dr. Yvonne Simpson (Educator and Disability Advocate)

Event Description:��In this reflection on the struggles of achieving accessibility and equitable practices in post-secondary education, Dr. Simpson brings to attention the significance of an intersectionality framework as a key indicator for analysis in determining real achievements in EDI initiatives. She argues that new mechanisms for accountability of progress towards achieving barrier free experiences can only be effectively advanced with changing the way systems operate in the lives of people who require accessible environments. Drawing on disability discourses and recent examples of discrimination, Simpson implicates deeply entrenched historical exclusionary practices, archaic administrative models in disability services, recruitment and hiring as troubling areas for equity identified racialized members in post-secondary institutions.

Accessibility plans are an important step towards enacting change within an organization. But creating an accessibility plan and implementing it can be challenging, especially for organizations that are developing plans for the first time. At this CAN Connect Forum, panelists with many years of accessibility planning experience will share their expertise, best practices, and tips related to:

• Involving and including persons with disabilities in the process
• Drafting plans that lead to meaningful change within an organization
• Implementing plans and getting others on board
• Going beyond compliance and enacting culture change
• Where to go for advice, resources, and support

This interactive forum will include breakout room conversations, a panel discussion, and a question-and-answer period.

Panelists will include:

Max Brault – Vice President, BDO Consulting – Strategy & Operations

At BDO, Max leads a team of consultants who specialize in supporting organizations across Canada in the creation of accessibility plans. As a former Senior Advisor for the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat, Max has over twenty years of policy, employment equity, and workplace accessibility experience including playing a guiding role in the formation of the legislation that became the Accessible Canada Act.

Pina D’Intino – Founder, Aequum Global Access

Pina is a sought-out consultant and speaker that actively promotes accessibility and inclusion from both an executive and a grassroots perspective. She has more than 29 years of experience in a large global financial institution, and for the last 15 years has pioneered and founded a cross-institutional hub for accessibility and inclusion. In 2013, Pina received the QE2 Diamond Jubilee medal by Ontario’s Lt. Governor the Honourable David Onley for her work in accessibility in employment.

Steven Woo – Lead, Accessibility Strategy and Planning, CNIB

Steven is part of national team responsible for leading accessibility and inclusion, providing training and thought leadership in the development and oversight of the multi-year accessibility plan at CNIB. Steven’s mission is to develop transformational strategies that create action to drive change and benefit. He’s a leader who is passionate about changing what it is to embrace accessibility, diversity, equity, inclusion, and believes it can be done.
