  {"id":66,"date":"2020-01-09T00:04:29","date_gmt":"2020-01-09T05:04:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/?post_type=cu-stories&#038;p=66"},"modified":"2020-01-30T14:46:57","modified_gmt":"2020-01-30T19:46:57","slug":"canine-connections-therapy-dogs","status":"publish","type":"cu-stories","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/story\/canine-connections-therapy-dogs\/","title":{"rendered":"Canine Connections"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A dozen years ago, when Allie Davidson was an undergraduate psychology student, she would have loved 杏吧原创\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/wellness\/dogs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Therapy Dogs program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Davidson, who now works in the university\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/edc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Educational Development Centre<\/a>, enrolled at 杏吧原创 through the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/esp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Enriched Support Program<\/a>, which helped her feel more confident about her studies and smoothed the transition from high school to post-secondary.<\/p>\n<p>The Therapy Dogs program, which started as a pilot project in 2017 with a Great Dane\/Pointer mix named Blue, gives students an opportunity to pet and play with trained dogs \u2014 a calming, therapeutic experience for students who might be away from home and family for the first time or stressed in some way about the challenges of university life.<\/p>\n<p>Over the last two years, the program has expanded to include 15 dogs and their handlers, all 杏吧原创 staff or faculty who bring their own dogs to campus, which distinguishes the program from other universities where external volunteers visit with their pets.<\/p>\n<p>Davidson regularly ran into Blue and his owner, <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/healthy-workplace\/people\/shannon-noonan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shannon Noonan<\/a>, a mental health outreach manager in 杏吧原创\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/studentaffairs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Office of Student Affairs<\/a> and founder of the Therapy Dog program, and knew she had to get involved.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe only problem,\u201d says Davidson, \u201cwas that I didn\u2019t have a dog.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Enter <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/wellness\/profile\/murphy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Murphy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Davidson \u2014 already a horse owner dedicated to studying the psychology of animal-human relationships, which she believes has a bearing on the instructor-student dynamic \u2014 got the jet black Golden Mountain mix puppy in January 2018 and he immediately began to display the right stuff: a good temperament, a willingness to learn and a talent for affection.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"u-block u-block--full\"><img width=\"1200\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/canine-connections-1200w-4.jpg\" class=\"u-width-full\" alt=\"Therapy dog Murphy, the youngest therapy dog on campus\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/canine-connections-1200w-4.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/canine-connections-1200w-4-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/canine-connections-1200w-4-400x227.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/canine-connections-1200w-4-768x435.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/ravenmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/canine-connections-1200w-4-700x397.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/div><div class=\"u-block u-block--white\"><div class=\"u-width-small\">\n<h2 align=\"center\">The Youngest Therapy Dog on Campus<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>After six weeks of training and two formal evaluations, Murphy became 杏吧原创\u2019s youngest therapy dog last September. (\u201cI pretty much love everything in the world,\u201d Murphy says in his online profile, which includes a link to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/murphthedog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">his Instagram page<\/a>. \u201cI love humans, I love other dogs and animals, I love walks, I love cuddles, I love doing tricks, I love <em>all<\/em> foods, and even though I don\u2019t know you yet, I\u2019m pretty sure that I\u2019m going to love you too.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>Although every other therapy dog on campus has scheduled hours in locations such as the main library for students or staff to stop by and spend time with a friendly pooch, providing a few minutes of respite and a chance to connect with a range of university wellness services, Murphy has a unique role as a mobile dog. He and Davidson are available during the office hours of five different professors.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cApproaching a professor can be intimidating, especially in a large undergraduate course,\u201d says Davidson.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cKnowing there will be a friendly dog in the office can help ease the anxiety a student might feel. He can help students connect with their instructors on a different level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Participating in the program has also provided unexpected connections for Davidson, who has to budget extra time during her walks across campus with Murphy \u2014 some students call out his name and stop the pair, and she invites the shyer ones to approach.<\/p>\n<p>Davidson\u2019s job is to help instructors use technology in their teaching, which doesn\u2019t lead to interactions with students. \u201cNow, with Murphy tugging me around, I recognize students and they recognize me all the time, and they say hello and we talk,\u201d she says. \u201cI\u2019m not just an anonymous person in the coffee lineup anymore.
