The event, chaired by His Excellency the Ambassador of the Gabonese Republic in Washington DC, provided a platform for national authors from various French-speaking countries to present their literary works to a large and engaged audience. We are thrilled to announce that Winnie’s first collection of short stories, “Handicapped,” was selected as a finalist for this Inaugural Book Fair. We extend our gratitude to the diplomatic representatives of the Republic of Cameroon in DC for their support in making this incredible event a success.

QES-AS-WA scholars participated in the conference either virtually in person. Professor Nduka Otiono, Principal Investigator of 杏吧原创 University鈥檚 QES-AS-WA project and Director of the Institute of African Studies, was Chief Host of the QES Conference.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Professor Professor Dorcas Odunaike, the Provost and Dean, School of Law and Security Studies, Babcock University, for her invaluable contribution as the Keynote speaker at the conference. Her insightful presentation was both informative and inspiring for your scholars.

Among the other speakers we had Professor Olubukola Olugasa, The HOD, Jurisprudence, and Public Law, School of Law and Security Studies, Babcock University, Professor Foluke Dada-Lawanson, The Dean College of Law, Caleb University and Ms. Funke Treasure from Lagos State, Nigeria. The expertise and real-world experiences of these speaker resonated deeply with our scholars, partners, and audience providing them with practical advice and motivation as they navigate their academic and professional journeys. Your encouragement to embrace challenges, pursue their passions, and strive for excellence has undoubtedly ignited a spark within them.

The presence of Dr. Anne Bowker, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, enriched the event. Her support and insights were truly inspiring for our scholars.

We welcomed faculty, staff, mentors, and research placement partners to join this gathering, either in person or online. Since its inception, the QES-AS-WA project had empowered scholars to conduct meaningful research that addresses key global challenges, strengthening partnerships between Canada and West Africa.

The QES-AS-WA program PI, Nduka Otiono, accompanied them. The sessions offered a perfect blend of insightful presentations and interactive discussions.

The conference provided an excellent opportunity to meet many brilliant researchers and exchange views on issues facing the African continent, with a particular focus on gender perspectives in today’s African context. The CAAS Conference enriched them with a wealth of knowledge, new perspectives, and a renewed sense of purpose. QES- AS-WA scholar Jane Ezirigwe said,聽 “The Lunch & Learn Series perfectly aligned with my professional development needs, providing valuable insights and practical knowledge. Networking opportunities were abundant, allowing us to connect with like-minded professionals and forge new partnerships. The collaborative spirit of the conference was palpable, underscoring the shared commitment to driving positive change for Africa. The Congolese food was amazing and the old city was beautiful.”

During the presentation, Dr. Bakare-Fatungase outlined the Research Made Simple Lab, showcasing its alignment with the Novice2Expert Research Framework. She emphasized the incorporation of the Design Thinking Methodology and underscored the pivotal role of librarians as “Design Thinkers” within the research ecosystem. Additionally, she explored the realm of Generative AI and highlighted the crucial responsibilities of librarians as “Ethical Moderators” in the educational landscape.

This event marked a significant milestone as the NewLife Project Inc. celebrated ten years of dedicated service to women and children in Canada. The occasion served as an opportunity to recognize the invaluable contributions of Black heroes and ‘Sheroes’ throughout history, whose perseverance and sacrifices paved the way for the emancipation and empowerment of the Black community.

NewLife Inc. remains steadfast in its commitment to leveraging these opportunities to create even greater avenues for women and youth empowerment through its women’s forum and youth empowerment program. The organization’s mission is to inspire, guide, and equip individuals with the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to thrive personally and professionally.

The event featured workshops, mentoring sessions, career development discussions, and community engagement initiatives, all aimed at addressing critical issues facing young individuals. Emphasizing the importance of building stronger women, families, and communities, the forum sought to harness the unique strengths, beauty, talents, and resilience inherent in every woman and youth.

Looking ahead, NewLife Inc. plans to relaunch its Women鈥檚 World Forum and introduce a new chapter of the youth empowerment program. Through these initiatives, the organization remains committed to honoring the legacy of Black patriots by making a positive difference in the lives of men, women, and children alike.

Currently engaged in her placement at Saint Paul University in Ottawa, Dr. Bakare is leveraging her scholarly endeavors to contribute to the advancement of knowledge.

During her visit, Dr. Bakare delivered two notable presentations. The first, titled “Research Made-Simple Lab,” elucidated the Novice2Expert Research Framework, emphasizing the pivotal role of librarians in enhancing students’ information literacy skills across varying proficiency levels. Dr. Bakare underscored the iterative nature of the research process, wherein individuals transition from novice to expert and vice versa with each new undertaking, highlighting the supportive function of librarians throughout this developmental trajectory.

On the subsequent day, February 13th, Dr. Bakare shifted focus to her research on Artificial Intelligence (AI). In her presentation entitled “Staying Ahead of the Digital Curve: Librarians as Panacea of the Generative AI Conundrum,” she explored the intricate dynamics of AI integration within educational contexts. Specifically, Dr. Bakare delved into the Library-AI Handshake Model and the intersection of librarianship with Generative AI. Her discourse elucidated the indispensable roles of librarians in navigating the evolving landscape of AI within educational frameworks, underscoring their fundamental contributions to fostering informed AI discourse and implementation strategies.

With intelligence, enthusiasm, and a dedication to both her personal success and that of her peers, her leadership prowess became evident through the significant role she assumed throughout her scholarship period.

Her placement partner was CODE and she successfully completed her scholarship term on January 20th.

Institute of African Studies organized a small send off party for Yemisi on Thursday, January 19, 2024.We wish her the very best in her future endeavors.

The NewLife Project is a Not-for-profit Organization working to transform the lives of women and through education and entrepreneurship programs, relief efforts, and empowerment seminars. As a part of reconnecting and to be inspired for the upcoming year, New Life organized a get together on Dec 2nd and Dec 10th from 3PM to 5PM. Professor Nduka Otiono participated on Dec 2nd.
