  {"id":925,"date":"2010-02-01T12:54:29","date_gmt":"2010-02-01T16:54:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/psychology\/?page_id=925"},"modified":"2025-11-24T12:21:05","modified_gmt":"2025-11-24T17:21:05","slug":"ralph-serin","status":"publish","type":"cu_people","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/psychology\/people\/ralph-serin\/","title":{"rendered":"Ralph Serin"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"mb-6 cu-pageheader cu-component-updated md:mb-12\">\n    <h1 class=\"cu-prose-first-last font-semibold !mt-2 mb-4 md:mb-6 text-3xl md:text-4xl lg:text-5xl lg:leading-[3.5rem] relative after:absolute after:h-px after:bottom-0 pb-5 after:w-10 after:bg-cu-red after:left-px\">\n                    \n             \n                \n            <\/h1>\n\n    \n    <\/header>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"research-interests\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Research Interests<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>I am interested in the interface between psychology and criminal justice and my research interests focus on decision making and correctional programming.&nbsp; The former considers correctional and parole decision-making, with an emphasis on models to improve standardization and research regarding accuracy.&nbsp; The latter work encompasses assessment of treatment readiness and treatment needs; measurement of programming gains; and pathways to desistance; all with a view to understanding differential outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Current research initiatives include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Criminal justice decision-making:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Utilization of case-based vignettes to contribute to an understanding of the process of release decision-making<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Development and testing a model of parole decision making.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Programming research: <\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Development of an offender competency model to inform correctional programming<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Understanding factors leading to crime desistence<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Multi-method assessment of treatment readiness and offender change to inform program evaluation research<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Development of decision models to incorporate correctional programming into risk appraisals and decision-making.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Staff skills in effective correctional programs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Violent offenders: <\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Research to distinguish types of violent offenders to inform various correctional outcomes.
