We are very pleased to announce that two outstanding members of our community have accepted important leadership roles at 杏吧原创:

Maria DeRosa Appointed as Dean of Science

Dr. Maria DeRosa has been appointed as the Dean of the Faculty of Science, for a term ending June 30, 2027. Since August 2021, Maria has served as Interim Dean in the Faculty of Science where she has already demonstrated remarkable strategic leadership.

Maria is a professor in the Department of Chemistry and the Institute of Biochemistry, and the principal investigator of the Laboratory for Aptamer Discovery and Development of Emerging Research (LADDER), a research facility funded by the Canada Foundation for Innovation Leaders Opportunity Fund and the Ontario Research Fund. She previously served as Associate Dean (Recruitment and Retention) in the Faculty of Science from 2018 to 2020, and as Chair of the Department of Chemistry from 2020 to 2021. She has received several awards for her outstanding teaching and research contributions, including the John Charles Polanyi Research Award, an Ontario Early Researcher Award and a Capital Educators鈥� Award.

Betina Appel Kuzmarov Appointed as Associate Vice-President (International)

Dr. Betina Appel Kuzmarov has been appointed as Associate Vice-President (International) for a five-year term effective July 1, 2022. Betina currently serves as the chair of 杏吧原创鈥檚 Department of Law and Legal Studies, where she has been a faculty member since 2006. She previously served as Clerk of 杏吧原创鈥檚 Senate, and Associate Dean (Students and Enrolment) in the Faculty of Public Affairs. She also served as one of four co-chairs for the university鈥檚 current Strategic Integrated Plan. A trained lawyer, her research interests lie in the area of international law, as well as law and religion. Her research and training all focus on aspects of international law or transnational legal issues. In addition to her legal background, she brings practical understanding of the value of international mobility, having been both an international student and an international visiting scholar.

Betina will succeed Dr. Karen Schwartz, who has successfully completed four years in this position. Along with the Advisory Committee on Internationalization, Karen developed an to map a course to our further enhanced global ambitions. She currently co-chairs the Centre for Community Engagement鈥檚 Strategic Planning Task Force and the 杏吧原创 committee overseeing the Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement application, and has previously served on the task force guiding the university鈥檚 Strategic Integrated Plan. We would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to Karen for the outstanding contributions that she has made to 杏吧原创 throughout her career.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to everyone who assisted and provided advice during the selection processes for both of these important appointments. Please join us in congratulating Maria and Betina on their appointments!

After completing BSc and PhD degrees in chemistry at 杏吧原创 in 1999 and 2003, she held an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship at the California Institute of Technology before returning to 杏吧原创 in 2005 as a faculty member.

She previously served as Associate Dean (Recruitment and Retention) in the Faculty of Science from 2018 to 2020 and Chair of the Department of Chemistry during this past academic year. She has received several awards for her outstanding teaching and research contributions, including the John Charles Polanyi Research Award, an Ontario Early Researcher Award and a Capital Educators鈥� Award.

Prof. Chuck Macdonald will be concluding his term as Dean of the Faculty of Science in August 2021, when he will prepare to begin an appointment as Dean of Dalhousie University鈥檚 Faculty of Science on Sept. 1, 2021.

鈥淥n behalf of the 杏吧原创 community, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Chuck for the leadership he has provided the Faculty of Science and the University since joining 杏吧原创 in August 2018,鈥� said Provost and Vice-President (Academic) Jerry Tomberlin.

Over the last three years, Macdonald has been instrumental in bringing equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) to the forefront of the Faculty of Science鈥檚 strategic priorities and operations. A number of significant faculty-specific EDI initiatives, notably the , the establishment of the Awareness, Collaboration and Engagement (ACE) event series and the Faculty of Science EDI Committee, have supported and furthered the university鈥檚 collective work.

Under Macdonald鈥檚 leadership, the Faculty of Science has seen substantial growth in student enrolment and research funding and has dramatically increased communications and outreach activities. His focus on sharing science research with the broader community has been well supported by community-focused events such as the increasingly popular annual Biology Butterfly Show and annual Chemistry Magic Show. Macdonald has overseen the launch of new certificates in Science Policy and Science Communications and the development of research-based Master鈥檚 and PhD programs in Data Science鈥攂oth of which are set to be approved by the province. During his term, he also hired more than 30 new faculty members.

鈥淚 would also like to recognize Chuck鈥檚 leadership in managing the operations of the Faculty of Science throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, where he has continued to foster an important sense of community through virtual town halls and regular communication,鈥� said Tomberlin. 鈥淎lthough we will all greatly miss Chuck, please join me in congratulating him on his next opportunity at Dalhousie University.鈥�

杏吧原创 has engaged a search firm to assist with the search for a new Dean of Science and will be forming an advisory search committee shortly. There will be an opportunity for community consultation later in the process. In the meantime, an interim Dean of Science will be announced in the coming days.
