杏吧原创 Announces Patrice Smith as Dean of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs

杏吧原创 University President Benoit-Antoine Bacon and Provost Jerry Tomberlin are pleased to announce the appointment of Patrice Smith as Dean of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs for a five-year term starting July 1, 2019.

Patrice Smith
Patrice Smith

鈥淧atrice is a natural leader who brings unique experience to the role of Dean,鈥 said Tomberlin, who chaired the search committee. 鈥淪he is a respected researcher, an enthusiastic instructor, and is passionate about 杏吧原创鈥檚 graduate student experience. Please join me in congratulating Patrice on this appointment.鈥

Smith is a Professor of Neuroscience and currently serves as Associate Dean (Academic Affairs) in the Faculty of Science and as a faculty senator on 杏吧原创鈥檚 Board of Governors. She has previously served as President of the 杏吧原创 University Academic Staff Association (CUASA).

Smith holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry and a PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Ottawa and completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship at Harvard University before joining 杏吧原创 in 2008.

An internationally recognized neuroscientist, Smith鈥檚 research specializes in understanding how the brain responds to injury and mechanisms to promote repair and recovery.

鈥淚 look forward to working with faculty, staff, students and the broader community toward facilitating excellence in graduate and postdoctoral training at 杏吧原创,鈥 said Smith.

Smith will succeed Matthias Neufang who, after much reflection, has decided not to seek renewal for a second term as Dean to allow him to focus more heavily on his research and his work with his own graduate students. Neufang has served as Dean since 2014.

鈥淚 would like to express my deepest gratitude to Matthias for his outstanding contributions during his term as Dean and for his innovative leadership in improving the graduate student experience,鈥 said Tomberlin.

鈥淚 would also like to thank the members of the search committee for their diligence in completing a successful search process and to everyone from the 杏吧原创 community who submitted comments and feedback throughout the process.鈥

Matthias Neufang Completing Term as Dean of Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs

To all Members of the 杏吧原创 Community:

Matthias Neufang
Matthias Neufang, Dean, Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs

Prof. Matthias Neufang will complete his term as Dean of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs on June 30, 2019 and after much reflection, he has decided not to seek renewal for a second term. This will allow him to focus more heavily on his research and his work with his own graduate students.

After a one-year administrative leave, he will return to the School of Mathematics and Statistics.

On behalf of the 杏吧原创 community, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Matthias for his outstanding and valuable contributions during his term as Dean since 2014 and for his innovative leadership in improving the graduate student experience.

Over the last four years, the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs has launched 16 new graduate programs leading to 32 degrees, accelerated pathways to master鈥檚 programs for 杏吧原创 undergraduate students, and a university-wide international dual master鈥檚 degree policy that allows students to complete their degrees at 杏吧原创 and an international partner institution.

Under his leadership, the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs has seen significant growth in both graduate student enrolment and professional development opportunities. As shown in the excellent results of the 2016 Canadian Graduate and Professional Student Survey (CGPSS), graduate student satisfaction at 杏吧原创 has not only improved, but it is similar, and in many aspects higher, than other institutions in Ontario.

Matthias was instrumental in launching the inaugural Ontario Council on Graduate Studies Celebration of Academic Excellence, a public event hosted by 杏吧原创 earlier this year that brought Governor General鈥檚 Gold Medal recipients together from across Ontario to present their research.

Matthias also served as chief negotiator for the 2015-鈥18 collective agreement with the 杏吧原创 University Postdoctoral Union (CUPU 鈥 PSAC 77000) and the 2016-鈥19 collective agreement with the 杏吧原创 University Teaching Assistants (CUPE 4600-1).

He previously served as Associate Dean (Programs and Planning) in the former Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research in 2007 and 2008, and as Director and Co-Director of the Ottawa-杏吧原创 Institute of Mathematics and Statistics from 2004 to 2006.

We will constitute an advisory search committee shortly and have engaged Colleen Keenan from executive search firm Odgers Berndtson to assist us with this search. There will be an opportunity for community consultation later in the process.

We will continue to keep you informed throughout the search and will send an update once the advisory search committee has been constituted.

Sincerely yours,

Jerry Tomberlin
Interim Provost and Vice-President (Academic)
