We are pleased to announce four appointments, including a new Assistant Vice-President, Equity and Inclusive Communities, that will further enhance 杏吧原创’s collective capacity to lead in human rights; equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI); as well as Black inclusion and Black flourishing.

Indeed, while 杏吧原创 has made important strides in equity and inclusion since the launch of the and the signing of the , we acknowledge that much work remains to be done.

We are grateful to the four outstanding individuals we are announcing today for being willing to take on these leadership roles, and would like to emphasize that working towards a more inclusive 杏吧原创 where everyone can fully belong is everyone’s shared responsibility.

We have embarked on the process of selecting an Assistant Vice-President, Equity and Inclusive Communities. We have engaged Laverne Smith & Associates Inc. to assist us with this search and an advisory search committee has been formed.

Consultation with the campus community is an integral part of this comprehensive search. On behalf of the committee, I invite you to offer information through a by November 2, 2021. The inclusion of your name is optional, and Laverne Smith & Associates Inc. will hold all responses in strict confidence.

This is an important matter for the university. Your input is critical and will help to inform the search process. I would ask you to take the few minutes required to help us with this request.

I am pleased to announce that Ikram Ahmed Jama has accepted the position of Interim Assistant Vice-President and University Advisor, Equity and Inclusive Communities, effective September 1 to December 31, 2021.

Ikram is currently the Senior Advisor in Equity and Human Rights in the , a role she has held since 2019 when she was promoted from the role of Equity Advisor. Since joining 杏吧原创 in 2017, she has made significant contributions in advancing equity and human rights across the university by focusing on creating spaces of transformative learning and engagement and demonstrating a commitment to collaboration and developing a shared vision. Ikram is a 杏吧原创 alumna with a Bachelor of Honours in Sociology and Master of Arts in Political Science.

I would also like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to Michael Charles, for his remarkable service as Assistant Vice-President and University Advisor, Equity and Inclusive Communities. As previously announced, Michael is taking on a new professional challenge as Centennial College鈥檚 Associate Vice-President Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.

I am writing to let you know that Michael Charles, 杏吧原创鈥檚 inaugural Assistant Vice-President and University Advisor, Equity and Inclusive Communities, has accepted a position at Centennial College as Associate Vice-President Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. Michael鈥檚 last day at 杏吧原创 will be August 31. We will shortly announce an Interim appointment to lead this important portfolio as we launch a search for a new Assistant Vice-President and University Advisor, Equity and Inclusive Communities.

We are thankful to Michael for the important work he has accomplished in further raising the engagement and visibility of human rights and equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) across campus. His achievements include the development of 杏吧原创鈥檚 institutional EDI Action Plan, which ambitiously outlines ways to reimagine curricular and pedagogical practices, and makes recommendations to further enhance student supports, research infrastructure, leadership development for academic and non-academic staff, organizational culture and more. He also contributed to the development of 杏吧原创鈥檚 new Strategic Integrated Plan and of 杏吧原创鈥檚 Sexual Violence Prevention Strategy. Under Michael鈥檚 collaborative leadership, the Equity and Inclusive Communities team developed and launched 杏吧原创鈥檚 annual Inclusion Week.
