\n Registration Info for 2017-18\n <\/h1>\n \n \n <\/header>\n\n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n

This week, on Thursday, June 22nd<\/span><\/sup>, registration will open for returning students.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As you prepare to register for classes for 2017-18, I would be glad to meet with any of you to discuss your course options, and to make sure that things are on track with your degree requirements.  Please email me (melissa.frankel@carleton.ca<\/a>) if you would like to set up an individual meeting to go over your audit and course selections.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

IF YOU HAVE SECOND-YEAR STANDING IN A PHIL PROGRAM<\/b>:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are you a PHIL honours or joint honours student?<\/span><\/b><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

* Consider enrolling in PHIL 2010<\/b> (Issues in Theoretical Philosophy) and PHIL 2020<\/b> (Issues in Practical Philosophy).  These are required courses for your degree.  You have to take them at some point, and my suggestion is to do it sooner rather than later.  They can help prepare you for a number of third-year courses.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

* If you haven\u2019t yet taken PHIL 2001<\/b> (logic) or PHIL 2003<\/b> (critical thinking) you should consider registering for them this year.  You will have to take one of these two to complete your degree.  I highly recommend taking these early on in your philosophy degree, because they will help you prepare for your upper-year courses.  If you are not sure which one you would prefer, feel free to email me, and we can chat about them.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are you a PHIL honours student?<\/span><\/b><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

*PHIL honours students are required to take PHIL 2005<\/b> (Greek Philosophy and the Western Tradition), which is a full-year class.  I suggest taking this one this year.  <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are you a PHIL general major?<\/span><\/b><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

* If you haven\u2019t yet taken PHIL 2001<\/b> (logic) or PHIL 2003<\/b> (critical thinking) you should consider registering for them this year.  You will have to take one of these two to complete your degree.  I highly recommend taking these early on in your philosophy degree, because they will help you prepare for your upper-year courses.  If you are not sure which one you would prefer, feel free to email me, and we can chat about them.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

IF YOU HAVE THIRD-YEAR STANDING IN A PHIL PROGRAM:<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are you a PHIL honours or joint honours student?<\/span><\/b><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

* Have you taken PHIL 2010<\/b> (Issues in Theoretical Philosophy) and PHIL 2020<\/b> (Issues in Practical Philosophy) yet?  These are required courses for your degree.  If you haven\u2019t  taken them, I strongly encourage you to enroll in them this year.  You don\u2019t want to get to your fourth year and realize that you haven\u2019t taken these yet, and that they conflict with a seminar you really want to take!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

* Have you fulfilled or are you coming close to fulfilling your \u201cEthics, Society and Aesthetics<\/b>\u201d and \u201cLanguage, Mind and World<\/b>\u201d requirements? Do you know what these are? If not, let\u2019s chat! If you are not sure which courses fit into which categories, you can find the lists here: <\/span>https:\/\/carleton.ca\/philosophy\/prospective-students\/undergraduate\/program-requirements\/<\/a>  – just scroll down a bit.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

* Joint honours students must take 2.0 cr<\/b> of PHIL classes in \u201cHistory of Philosophy<\/b>.\u201d If you have any trouble selecting these courses, please come speak to me or email me, and I would be happy to advise you on your course selection.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are you a PHIL honours student?<\/span><\/b><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

* PHIL honours students are required to take PHIL 3002<\/b> (17th<\/span><\/sup> century philosophy) and PHIL 3003<\/b> (18th<\/span><\/sup> century philosophy).  <\/span>**We only offer these courses on alternating years.**  PHIL 3003 will be offered in Fall 2017, and so it will NOT<\/b> be offered in 2018-19.  If you have not yet taken PHIL 3003, and if you intend to graduate in 2018-19, you must<\/b> take it in Fall 2017.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are you a PHIL general major?<\/span><\/b><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

* General major students must take at least 0.5 cr<\/b> of PHIL at the third-year level<\/b> or higher, and at least 3.0 cr<\/b> in PHIL at the second-year<\/b> level or higher.  Have you enrolled in a third-year class?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

* <\/span>IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO GRADUATE IN 2017-18: first, YAY, congratulations!! Second, come see me to make sure that you are on track to graduate \u2013 you don\u2019t want to encounter any nasty surprises in March!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

IF YOU HAVE FOURTH-YEAR STANDING IN A PHIL PROGRAM:<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

* All PHIL honours and joint honours students are require<\/span>d to take a number of fourth-year credits.  Honours students must take 2.0 cr<\/b> in PHIL at the fourth-year<\/b> level, and joint honours students are required to take 1.0 cr<\/b> in PHIL at the fourth-year<\/b> level.  If you are not sure which seminars you would like to take, please do feel free to come speak with me or email me about the possibilities.
