While the word music comes from the ancient Greek (mousik, meaning the art of the muses ), music is prehistorical, as evidenced by flutes and drums found at paleolithic-era archeological sites. You undoubtedly have a favorite style of music, or a favorite musician, and you may even play a musical instrument. But have you ever asked yourself, What is music? Over the coming weeks, well try to answer this question by exploring how philosophers, musicians and scientists have answered this question. Our learning journey will feature the works of thinkers like Pythagoras, Plato, Kant, Hegel, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, and others. We will begin by learning about fundamental elements of music such as pitch, timbre, harmony, melody, tempo, rhythm, and dynamics. Then, we will read and discuss what the above-mentioned philosophers have written about music: what music is, what music isnt, and how it is related to other forms of art. Along the way well also learn about the history of music, what musicians have to say about music, and what science can tell us about musics effects on the mind and body. Of course, we will also use examples of music from all kinds of styles and genres to illuminate our inquiry. We will encounter all sorts of interesting questions pertaining to music that span metaphysics, mind, ethics, and aesthetics. Is music just organized sound? How is music related to the emotions? What is the role of the mind in enjoying music and performing music? Is music similar to language, or to mathematics, and if so how? Are there styles of music or musical compositions than are better than others? What features of music contribute to its aesthetic properties? Are some musical styles or compositions morally good or bad? Well explore all of these questions, and more, as we learn about the philosophy of music together! Since we are meeting in person for this class, please make sure that you review Ӱԭ Universitys policies on vaccinations, masks, and social distancing for the fall semester. Office Hours Due to concerns related to Covid-19, office hours will be held virtually using my Discord Server ( HYPERLINK "https://discord.gg/NbrGNuD" https://discord.gg/NbrGNuD). Office hours will be held by appointment/as needed. To schedule an appointment, youll first need to download the Discord app, set up your account, and join my server using the above hyperlink. Please dont be shy! I encourage everyone to request an appointment for a virtual meeting at any time if they have any questions or concerns. Attendance & Participation Regular participation is expected in this seminar. I will be taking attendance at the beginning of each class. Your attendance throughout the semester will count toward 10% of your final grade. I also encourage everyone to participate during the seminar by asking questions, offering your thoughts, or engaging in group discussions (to be led by myself). Readings & Reading Responses You are expected to keep up with the readings assigned for this class. My lectures will help make the readings more accessible, but they are no substitute for reading the readings themselves. See the Lecture Schedule (above) and our course module on Brightspace for a list of readings for this class. In this course you will complete TWO reading responses, each worth 15% of your final grade. Each response should be approx. 500-750 words in length, and any works or ideas referenced must be properly cited. Your task is to identify an interesting idea from one of the lectures and critically engage with it. I will provide direction on how to choose an idea for your responses, how to critique the ideas youll learn about in this class, and how to cite sources properly before the first reading response is due. Each of these reading responses is to be submitted electronically in .doc or .pdf format on Brightspace by 11:59 pm on each of the due dates given above. Special Topics Our lectures for Week 13 will be special topics lectures. Students will suggest possible topics of interest related to this class that theyd like me to lecture on. The class will vote on the possible topics, and I will design a lecture for each of the two most popular topics. Each student must submit their suggestion about one paragraph containing your suggested topic and why it would be interesting/how it relates to the class via the submission portal on Brightspace by 11:59 pm on February 16 (.doc or .pdf format only). Your suggestion is worth up to 5% of your final grade (easy marks!). Term Paper Topic Proposal In this class you will be required to write a term paper. I will deliver a lecture on how to write a research essay (February 28). Our next class (March 2) will be an essay workshop where students can ask me questions about essay writing, topic selection, and conducting research. Your topic proposal should be 500-750 words in length, and it should identify the topic of your term paper, your thesis statement and/or research question, and a rough outline of your intended paper. The proposal is due at 11:59 pm on March 9 and is worth 15% of your final grade. Submit your proposal on Brightspace in .doc or .pdf format. Term Paper Your term paper, which serves as the final take-home examination for this class, is to be handed in on Brightspace by April 27 at 11:59 pm (i.e. the last day of the exam period). It is worth 40% of your final grade. The paper is to be approx. 1250-1500 words long and should deal with an idea or concept from this class that interests you. It must be submitted electronically on Brightspace in .doc or .pdf format. I will discuss how to select a topic and how to write a proper paper before the papers are due, and I will provide detailed feedback on your essay topic proposals (see above), so I expect that the essays will be clearly and concisely written, be well-researched, and will cite sources properly. I encourage students to contact me if they have any questions about this assignment at any time. Assignment Deferral Policy Students who are unable to complete a test or an assignment may ask for a deferral only under two conditions: illness or bereavement. Should you miss a test for these reasons, you must contact me by email within 24 hours of missing the test/assignment due date to request a deferral and arrange to provide me with the appropriate documentation (e.g. doctors note, etc.). Electronic Devices in the Classroom Students may use electronic devices in the classroom such as laptops, tablets, and smartphones, if (and only if) they are used to take notes, view lecture materials, and so forth. Otherwise, these devices are to be left on silent and put away so as not to distract the students around you. Grading System Letter grades assigned in this course will have the following percentage equivalents: A+ = 90-100 B = 73-76 C - = 60-62 A = 85-89 B - = 70-72 D+ = 57-59 A - = 80-84 C+ = 67-69 D = 53-56 B+ = 77-79 C = 63-66 D - = 50-52 F Failure.
