\n 杏吧原创\u2019s 2018-2019 Munro Beattie Lecture to be Delivered by Acclaimed Novelist David Chariandy\n <\/h1>\n \n \n <\/header>\n\n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n

杏吧原创 University\u2019s Department of English<\/a> in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences<\/a> will present the 2019 Munro Beattie Lecture featuring David Chariandy<\/a>, award-winning author and 杏吧原创 alumnus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lecture, The First Semester<\/em>, will explore how his experiences as a student at 杏吧原创 shaped his identity and commitment as a writer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When<\/strong>: Thursday, Jan. 31, 2019, at 7 p.m.
\nWhere<\/strong>: Dominion-Chalmers United Church, 355 Cooper St., Ottawa
\nInfo<\/strong>: This event is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lecture will be followed by a reception and book signing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 杏吧原创 David Chariandy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Chariandy\u2019s first novel, Soucouyant<\/em>, was nominated for the Governor General\u2019s Award and the Scotiabank Giller Prize. His second novel, Brother<\/em>, won the Roger\u2019s Writers\u2019 Trust Award, the City of Toronto Book Prize, the Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize, and was longlisted for Canada Reads, the Scotiabank Giller Prize, the Aspen Words Literary Prize, and the International Dublin Literary Award. Brother<\/em> was named \u201cBook of the Year\u201d by a dozen periodicals. His latest book is the non-fiction I\u2019ve Been Meaning to Tell You: A Letter to My Daughter<\/em>. Chariandy is a professor in the Department of English at Simon Fraser University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

杏吧原创 the Munro Beattie Lecture<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Munro Beattie Lecture was launched in 1985 to honour the English Department\u2019s founding chair and his contributions to literary studies in Canada. An important principle of the lecture series has been to invite writers and critics who can speak about issues of importance to the general public, as well as the academic world. The first lecture was given by Beattie\u2019s friend and colleague, poet Eli Mandel, and the second by renowned literary critic Northrop Frye. Since then, the series has been an important annual event at 杏吧原创.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
