As part of 杏吧原创 University\u2019s Science Caf\u00e9 series, Jeff Manthorpe of the Department of Chemistry<\/a> will present 2019: UNESCO International Year of the Periodic Table of the Elements.<\/a><\/em> The lecture will share insights on the elements in honour of the 150th anniversary of Dmitri Mendeleev\u2019s first periodic table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1869, Mendeleev publicly presented his periodic table for the first time at a meeting of the Russian Chemical Society. The 150 years since have seen fascinating developments in the atomic sciences of chemistry and physics, leading UNESCO to declare 2019 as the International Year of the Periodic Table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To celebrate the scientific milestone, this talk will explore Mendeleev\u2019s fascinating character, as well as some of the major scientific and human stories that have advanced the periodic table from fewer than 60 elements to the current 118.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
