Emma brings so much to the game, with her dedication and love for the sport. I\u2019m so thankful that we were able to grow up together, and we wouldn\u2019t be where we are without her.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Where they are, in addition to representing Canada in the international spotlight, is a team that\u2019s heading to the Olympics as the reigning world champions after posting a perfect 13-0 record last year at the World Championships in Beijing.&nbsp;They\u2019re also&nbsp;three-time national women\u2019s curling champions, winning the Scotties Tournament of Hearts in 2017, 2014 and 2013.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Olympics are something we\u2019ve all dreamed of being part of since we were kids,\u201d says Miskew, who\u2019s the \u201cthird\u201d \u2014&nbsp;or second-last curler \u2014&nbsp;on Team Homan, which is based out of the historic downtown <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ottawacurlingclub.com\/\">Ottawa Curling Club<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEven watching them on TV, I get goosebumps. It still feels surreal. A year later, they were taking on national junior teams comprised of 19-year-olds in international tournaments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRachel and I are like sisters,\u201d says Miskew, who, like Homan, comes from an Ottawa curling family.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWe help each other out on the ice and off, especially when things are stressful.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Now 28, Miskew has vague memories of her first time throwing smaller junior rocks. She fell in love with the sport because it is both social and competitive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always been a competitive person,\u201d she says, \u201cand I like pushing myself to be better. Initially, I didn\u2019t enjoy practising as much as games, but now I know that\u2019s an important part of our development and success.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull Training<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Miskew graduated from Ottawa\u2019s Brookfield High School and, in 2007, enrolled at 杏吧原创 for the university\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/id\/\">Bachelor of Industrial Design<\/a> program, drawn to the opportunity to work with both graphics and three-dimensional objects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHer mother introduced her to the program when she was in high school,\u201d explains a <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/engineering-design\/\">Faculty of Engineering and Design<\/a> profile <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/engineering-design\/2014\/rink-emma-miskew-bid12\/\">published in 2014<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cMiskew thought it was a perfect fit because it combined her longtime interest in art and drawing, and her ability to analyze products and figure out how they can be improved.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>She enjoyed her five years hunkered down studying and working in the Mackenzie Building, and recalls that professors were very accommodating of exam and assignment scheduling requests necessitated by her travel and training demands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey understood that I wasn\u2019t going away just for fun,\u201d says Miskew. \u201cPeople understand the benefits of sport, which is good not only for personal well-being but also national pride.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Miskew landed an internship and, after graduation, a job with the Senate of Canada\u2019s interior design department \u2014&nbsp;an interesting period as the Red Chamber was being prepared for its impending <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.carleton.ca\/story\/virtual-senate-tour\/\">major renovations<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But she increasingly had to take unpaid leave from her position at the Senate to curl, so Miskew left the job and launched a freelance design business, which she plans to scale up after the huge time commitment of the Olympics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To date, Miskew has worked on design projects ranging from display cases to logos, business cards, posters and ads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also worked with curling apparel and equipment company Goldline to design the look of the uniforms that Team id=\"looking-ahead-to-their-olympic-curling-debut\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Looking Ahead to their Olympic Curling Debut<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite their already extensive international experience, Miskew says there are nerves as Team Homan gets ready for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pyeongchang2018.com\/en\/game-time\/results\/OWG2018\/en\/curling\/event-schedule-women.htm\">its first draw<\/a> against the host Republic of Korea on Feb. 15 at the 3,000-seat Gangneung Curling Centre.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s going to be pressure,\u201d she says, \u201cbut that comes with the Olympics, and we wouldn\u2019t be doing this if we didn\u2019t have the ability to respond. Really, we just need to play our game and do the things that make us good.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>That means, for Miskew, not only making her shots and sweeping effectively, but also strategizing and communicating information to Homan when it\u2019s the skip\u2019s turn to throw each end\u2019s final two rocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEmma has a lot of responsibility on the ice,\u201d says Homan. \u201cSometimes, we only have seconds to make a crucial decision.
