Drumming Workshop and Artist Talk with Dominic Donor

ÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´ Music’s West African Rhythm Ensemble is pleased to welcome visiting guest artist Dominic Donkorwho is working with the ensemble throughout the Winter term and will perform at their concert on April 9.

Donkor will also present a public hand drumming Workshop and Artist Talk on Sunday March 24th from 3-5pm in the ÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´ Music Department Loeb A900.  The workshop is $15 for the general public and free for ÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´ students with ID (at the door). Instruments provided, and all welcome!

Dominic Donkor is a musician based in Montréal. Originally from Ghana, he plays several styles of percussion, sings, and has an extensive background in traditional music and dance styles of West Africa.  Before coming to Canada in 1990, Dominic toured extensively with the prestigious Ghana National Dance Ensemble. These tours took him to South America, Europe, South Africa & USA. Dominic has taught classes and workshops in a variety of settings, and was a regular guest artist with Ottawa’s Baobab Drum Dance Community.  He performed and toured for several years with Zab Maboungou and the Nyata Contemporary Dance Company. He also co-directed the Montreal based group, Keteke which performed traditional music from Ghana. Dominic is currently freelancing and was recently a roundtable panelist at the Society for Ethnomusicology’s Annual Conference in Ottawa.

Donkor’s visit is made possible through the which

provides support for projects that enhance and expand the experiential study of cultural disciplines from Africa and the African diaspora.  The fund serves students in ÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´ Music, and in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences more generally. Endowed in 2021 as a legacy project by Baobab Drum Dance Community and its supporters, this fund honours Baobab’s significant achievements in intercultural arts education, and provides new opportunities for current and future generations of students at ÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´.

Azonto Dance Workshop with Benedictus Mattson

The is pleased to announce its inaugural project with visiting guest artist Benedictus Mattson, an African Popular Dance Specialist. Mattson will be in residence with ÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´ Music’s West African Rhythm Ensemble throughout the Winter term and perform at their concert on April 5.

Mattson will also present an Azonto dance workshop and Artist Talk on February 27th at ÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´ Dominion-Chalmers Centre open to ÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´ students and the general public, in partnership with the . The ORI is an Ottawa-based tap dance community that creates opportunities for the growth, visibility, and promotion of tap dance and tap dance artists in the Ottawa region. Their practice is grounded in respect for tap dance as a rhythmically sophisticated art form, its roots deep in Black history and culture.

Benedictus Mattson is a Choreographer, Performer, and Researcher with interest in Ghanaian popular dances. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in dance and a Master of Fine Arts in Theatre Arts from the University of Ghana. Benedictus served as an Assistant Lecturer at the Department of Dance Studies, University of Ghana, where he taught popular dance, Choreography, African dance performance, dance forms of Ghana/Africa to both local and international students at the undergraduate level. He is currently a Cultural Studies PhD candidate at Queen’s University where he investigates the Mediatization of Ghanaian popular dance with primary focus on the Azonto dance’s presence on Instagram and how dancers’ interaction with/on the social media platform helps to transform, configure, and reconfigure the dance.

The Baobab Collaborative Arts Fund provides support for projects that enhance and expand the experiential study of cultural disciplines from Africa and the African diaspora.  The fund serves students in ÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´ Music, and in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences more generally. Live Music Returns: Fall 2021 Ensemble Concerts

ÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´ Music is excited to announce the return of live Ensemble concerts to cap off the Fall 2021 term. Join us for five nights and one afternoon of programming at the Kailash Mital Theatre and the ÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´ Dominion-Chalmers Centre. Members of the ÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´ community (students, faculty and staff) are invited to attend in-person. Admission to the fall series is free (with the exception of the ÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´-OSO event), but seating is limited. Unable to attend? Most events will also livestreamed via our channel.
