For the work in Connective Tissue Research, we used multi-modal, histochemical imaging techniques to investigate the effects of obesity and joint injury on the structure and composition of articular cartilage. For the study published in the Journal of Biomechanics, we used multi-photon laser scanning microscopy and found that cartilage cells perceived and responded differently to dynamic compared to static mechanical cues. Importantly, we show that the cells were able to quickly adapt volumetrically and morphologically to cyclical mechanical loads. These studies improve our understanding of how cartilage and cells respond to different biomechanical and biochemical perturbations, which may be used to establish the mechanism of the painful joint diseases such as osteoarthritis.

Ankush Deol, Mikhail Chizhov, Kangkan Sarkar, and Yazan Zeidat join as undergraduate research assistants.

Abdelaziz Atahran, Mehdi Mazari, and Riphael Check join us from France for this summer.

They will work on various research including constructing a novel bioreactor for tracking tissue adhesion development, a low-cost melt-electrowriting printer, and various topics regarding biomechanics of cartilage tissue and cells.
