Minutes: iPad Intermediate – iCloud (Jan 30 2013) /mobileservices/2013/minutes-ipad-intermediate-icloud-jan-30-2013/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=minutes-ipad-intermediate-icloud-jan-30-2013 Wed, 06 Feb 2013 21:19:27 +0000 http://carleton.ca/iteam/?p=12925 What is iCloud?

• a free service
• description: • components:

We demo 3 of iCloud’s features today:

1. Find iPhone
     – go to icloud.com from any computer, browser in the world, sign-in with iCloud account, locate/ping my iPad, iPhone

2. Notes App on iPad
     – make a note on iPad, auto-sync’d to icloud.com, accessible from any computer, browser in the world, sign-in with iCloud account
Tip: you can have multiple Notes “accounts”, one for each
email account, configured on your iPad
Advice: Simplify Notes synchronization by turning off Notes
syncing in all your email accounts but your iCloud account.

3. iCloud backup on iPad

– iPad must be plugged in, locked, on WiFi for automatic backup
– Can also force backup regardlesss with “Backup now” button.
– 5GB free backup space provided free, but can buy more backup space.
– Can disable backup per App

iCloud features for a future session:

• Findmyfriends
• Documents in the Cloud
• Photostream :

iCloud account:

• apple.com/icloud/setup
• Sign in with Apple ID
– Have you ever bought anything on iTunes on your PC or Mac?
If yes, you can use that ID.
eg. joeblow@gmail.com, joeblow@hotmail.com
if forget userid or password:
forgot.apple.com

• If your Apple ID above doesn’t end in @icloud.com, you’ll be
prompted to make one on your iPad when you enable iCloud
–    – this puts you into the iCloud system; uses the same password
as your iTunes AppleID above, and you can use either
interchangeably: eg. joeblow@gmail.com, joeblow@icloud.com

Minutes: iPad Intermediate – W-drives (Nov 28 2012) /mobileservices/2012/minutes-ipad-intermediate-accessing-w-drives-nov-28-2012/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=minutes-ipad-intermediate-accessing-w-drives-nov-28-2012 Thu, 29 Nov 2012 15:25:15 +0000 http://carleton.ca/iteam/?p=12431 You may already be using a departmental shared drive from your office PC (or Mac). This month come learn how to access that W-Drive from your iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch, as well!

•    SMB (aka W-Drive) client for iPhone and iPad
• VPN setup for ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ (required for off-campus access to W-drives)
• Q&A

Note: If you’re new to the iPad, you may wish to also consider our rotating series of iPad for Beginners sessions—you’re welcome to attend either beginner or intermediate sessions. Or both!

Minutes:

re:  app, $5

• FileBrowser instructions for ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ are available from CCS:

• These instructions assume you are using the CCS-provided W-drive.
– Server name: ccsnas01.cunet.carleton.ca
– Network share path to CCS-provided W-drive\DeptFolders$

• One attendee had their files stored on a different server, so that the fully-qualifed name or IP address of their server had to be substituted in place of ccsnas01…

• Several attendees were storing their files in differently-named network shares:
…we had them log into our PC as themselves, and we noted the path to their W-drive and then changed the path in from “DeptFolders$” to where their PC had indicated they were storing their files.

• One attendee bought FileBrowser ($5) online and was concerned when she didn’t immediately receive her invoice from iTunes. This is normal—iTunes invoices normally follow 1-3 days after purchase.

re: VPN

• Clarification: VPN is not necessary to use FileBrowser on-campus over the CU-Wireless WiFi network; only from off-campus

• ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ VPN instructions are available from CCS:
• A number of attendees received messages that the “shared secret” was incorrect. The actual problem was that they had entered the Group name inaccurately—it’s “ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´IntranetVPN“, case-sensitive, and note “Intranet” not “Internet”.

• One attendee asked if Android comes with a built-in VPN client, as do all iPhones, iPod Touches, and iPads. The iTeam is focused on iOS, but we’re happy to help our Android-using colleagues when we can. The answer is that the presence of a built-in VPN support varies by Android device and OS version. If you are looking for a 3rd-party VPN client for your Android be sure that it supports the “IPSec” aka “Cisco” flavour of VPN, which is what ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ uses.

Thanks to all who attended—your participation made our year-end session a great one! See you back in January 2013.
